Changing from fuel you were remapped on

Featured Replies

Hoping its just a phase but have noticed in last week or so my smokiness has got a bit excessive (yes.. MORE than usual :P :P)

The only thing I can think of (as it postdates use of Millers additive) is that now I work at a new place I no longer pass a Sainsburys to get City Diesel... the fuel I was remapped on at Jabbasport. I now am using regular BP diesel, with the additive still too. Do you think in the long run the car will adapt to the different diesel, or should I start making the effort and going a couple of miles out my way to use a JS garage to fill up? I don't really want to as I see those miles as wasted fuel/time, etc.

Do you know how they mapped the car to city diesel? :D

 Only the fact thats what was in the tank. i remember topping up with it on my way there that morning. :)

I always assumed it was only petrol where you could adjust timings, etc where the rating/type of fuel mattered. With a diesel doesn't it just squirt it into the engine and hope for the best?

Guess its down to cetane ratings perhaps? Maybe I just copped a dodgy batch on the last fill-up? who knows? Thats why I wondered really as the only time I've noticed this before is when I switch for one tank from city diesel - now I'm very unlikely to use it again unless by chance I'm passing a J.S. All I pass now is shell and BP garages on my commute.

I haven't had my remap yet, and have always put BP ultimate diesel in my car, and have noticed very little smoking, but infrequently, I get a burst of excessive smoking. No real idea why?

Pete

My car smokes rather a lot with BP standard derv, Esso is ok-ish, Shell is generally the best (standard fuel) for smoke (lack thereof). BP Ultimate doesn't smoke as much and Shell Extra is also great for lack of smoke.

Very slight MPG improvement on the latter two as well compared to standard.

Hmmm - maybe I should pay the extra penny and see what the Shell derv will do for me? Also get Nectar at BP though. :)

I'll see how this tank progresses. For the first time ever my car is predicting a 500 mile+ range on a tank of diesel.

Hmm - I tend to hit below 400 per tank most weeks, usually 350 - admittedly I tend to do most of my driving v early or pretty late so I don't get held up much, and the M4 has a few mountains in it (or was that hilly bits, I'm Dutch so mountains don't compute  ) - seriously though, I tend to do around 350/tank on Esso, on the other hand if SWMBO travels with me a lot during the week I get well over 400 ;)

I had Asda Diesel when I had my remap done at Jabba and after speaking to Mike, he is under the impression that there is no real power gains between brands.

Still managed to get 193 bhp and 423 Nm torque using this fuel so it cant be all that bad.

Diesel you squirt it in just as the piston is on it's way up then wait for it to explode as the piston compresses it to a pulp.

I can't see derv requiring a tweak to a remap tbh.

Could it be the outside temps? It has been a lot warmer the last couple of weeks - i even had to switch the aircon on.

Warmer temp - less dense air, overfueling more? or is this compensated for?

Would the MAF sensor cause the ECU to attempt to compensate for a lower air flow?

Why not use the cheapest derv and then chuck in some veggie oil to clear up the smoking and make it run smoother?

PD engine cant run on veggie oil.

Back on topic. My car was remapped with Sainsbury's city diesel, it runs no different on regular diesel or ultimate diesel.

I did however make a huge cockup just before remapping. The car had just 5k miles on and I didnt know the PD engine was supposed not to have any additives, with that NOT in mind I put some millers diesel performanc extra stuff in, but to my shock I realised I had put in enough for about 10 full tanks of diesel in just 1/2 a tank . I'm pleased to say it made little difference and the car got a healthy 195 bhp and 323 lb/ft of torque on the rollers :D
