What bulbs can I change?

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a 2019 model with LED lights.
so I can’t touch the headlights or indicators at the front but the fog s are bulbs also without taking the lights apart are the brake lights and rear fog led or bulbs in fancy housings. I can see rear lights and reverse lights are bulbs.

I travel to France a lot and your supposed to carry a bulb kit a bit of knowledge will make sure that I get the right kit.

is there a list anywhere to check which bulbs go where?

thanks

Supposed to, yes, but it's not the law, BUT..... the police over there do take pleasure in fining. The main thing I've seen people getting 'spoken to' about is speeding.

For a lot of vehicles you can't change the bulbs at the roadside. Loads of Citroens are bumper off jobs. Woe betide someone driving a PF mk3 has their front indicator go, as you'd be expected to have a scalpel, the repair cap, as well as a bulb. Be fun trying to change that at the roadside.

The best thing I'd suggest is to ensure you've all your documents, the breath test kits, a warning triangle and a hi viz within reach in the cabin for everyone who'll be in the car. European breakdown and recovery is a must. Also, make sure the minute you're off the ferry / chunnel to switch the beam direction on your infotainment menu.

I think that if you find yourself talking to the gendarmes then they will check everything.

I just want a kit that will be worth having.
I could just get any old kit for a £5 and point at it if required..........

You'd have to piece together your own kit. There isn't a 'ready to buy' one

I would have thought a generic bulb kit from Halford's or whatever would be sufficient.

Wherrrre is your bulb kit, m'sieu?

Here it is, officer. (Shows generic kit with various bulbs clearly visible.)

Merci, m'sieu, 'ave a nice day!

No policeman will know enough about every single car on the road to say it isn't correct, and they have better things to do with their time. Also, I carry a breath test kit. Even though they are not a legal requirement any more, I have heard of people being asked for them at the roadside, perhaps by police being awkward or looking for something to catch you out. For a couple of quid, it might save an hour of arguing in a foreign language when I am supposed to be on holiday.

In my experience, if you show the police what they need to see, quickly and politely, you are on your way in no time.
