Octavia not starting at all

Featured Replies

hi everyone

I have just brought a Octavia 2.0 diesel on a 66 plate its been involved in a rear end accident no airbags gone off the problem I have is that the car doesn't want to turn over as soon as I turn the key the relays in the fuse box in the engine bay click but no start there are a couple lights on the dash but none that seem to be stopping the car from running i have also plugged the car in to a diagnostic scanner but it showed no faults so I'm at a loss as to what to try next i have had a quick search on the internet about a pyrotechnic fuse but i can not find any info any help would be much appreciated

Thanks Mo

That clicking is a common sound when not enough power is coming from the battery.

Good morning thanks for the reply I should have mentioned I have replaced the battery and it’s still the same it’s not like dying battery kind of sound the cars not even trying to turn over just one click like something is prohibiting the car from starting

Im not sure but is there a fuel cut off somewhere near the boot, that possibly needs reset

Immobiliser?

Have you tried recoding the keys to the car?

Also some cars have a fuel cut off device in the even of a forceful accident.

Have you checked if the car has one and if it needs replacing or resetting?

Immobiliser - No. You can’t recode keys. You can manually resync a remote but you can’t recode keys. And contrary to popular myth, keys don’t “fall out of programming”. The immo uses a solid state memory which memorises the key even if no power to the car for months. A key can be faulty - faulty aerial not sending signal to the car - but in any case of it was a key issue you will get a warning on the dash that key is not recognised.

Fuel Cut Off - Again I doubt it. Fuel cut off will just make it sound like I are trying to start a car with no fuel. It won’t cause the clicking Relay noise u are hearing.

My money is still on a battery issue. See a lot of it. Lights on dash will flicker a bit and you can hear relays clicking on and off. In some cases putting jump leads or a jump pack on is not enough. You need to remove both + & - leads from car battery and put jump pack straight onto the leads. In some cases a bad battery on the car can drain the new power source if it’s still in the circuit.

If you can do a short video and post it, we might see and hear the symptoms better.

I'd agree with this as being a good place to investigate, but I'd add that if the battery is known to be good, check the car's connection to the battery is good.

The battery is brand new even with the battery taken out and just jumped it still does the same thing it’s just a single click that I can hear from the relays I have moved most of the relays around but still the same could it be a wire going to the starter that’s not getting any power the positive and negative terminals look to be in good order every thing else in the car seems to be working well I will try and get a video of it tonight if I can

I meant actually recoding with vcds.

In theory it cannot be lost but I have had to recode keys before. Plus how do you know nobody borrowed a part from the car and replaced it before it was sent away?

probably fair, but the relay could be blocking power to the fuel pump or just turning off other circuits. Unless we know how the post crash systems work, you don’t know what the effect is.

In addition to the above, have you actually scanned the car for errors?

Bad earth or strap? - simple by-pass with a jump lead to check.

Faulty solenoid on the starter?
