advice needed; Octavia locking nut key

Featured Replies

Hi all, I know this topic has been done before, however my particular part seems a bit different to any locking nut keys I have been able to find online, so thought I would throw it out to the forum.

It seems as thought my  locking nut keys have got lost to one of the garages my car went to last year, and so I need a replacement. I took off one of the plastic central wheel hub covers to see the nuts and this is what was there, looks like a basic shape, 10 teeth, but can't find them online with this square tooth design. Can anyone signpost me to somewhere for a replacement for the locking nut key for these nuts?

you are a superstar thank you! Will order now! Does the other item in the pic need a key? can't figure out what its there for when there are five nuts on the wheel!

I lost my key for my locking wheel nuts, and skoda are charging £54 to remove and replace, which I thought was reasonable.

It looks like the hub centre bolt but I'll have to dig further to confirm that.

What model year is your car, and does it have original wheels or aftermarket ones?

It is 58 plate, mk 2, original 16 inch alloys. Just needed to know incase I need a key for that too!

The other one in the centre is the drive shaft bolt. This is a 12 sided socket if memory serves me well.

awesome thanks for the info guys; am very grateful! Nightmare to have to get a 5 part set for one bloody centre hub nut key!

presumably the hub nut is not needed on the rears as those wheel aren't driven? I haven't had the centre caps off those yet to look. And is WHT002795 a 36mm? trying just to buy the one socket if I can!

"WHT 002 795 dodecagonal head bolt M16X1,5X70"

As far as I can see this is the same for all gearboxes - manual/auto/5 speed/6 speed - for a MY08 Octy.

If the hub nut follows the metric standards then for an M16 bolt you need a 24mm 12-sided socket - one of which is included in that kit I linked to.

I believe you're looking for a bi-hex 24mm socket, ideally deep and impact.  Here's one from from China if you don't mind waiting: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/24mm-3-4-DRIVE-DEEP-IMPACT-WRENCH-SOCKET-12-POINT-SINGLE-HEX-HUB-NUTS/254452281776?hash=item3b3e89b1b0:g:U2IAAOSw-zxd85pt

WHT 000 229A M16x1.5x70 shouldered bolt.

jesus so a locking key and 12 sided socket for the rear, and then something else for the rears!

Erm, you dont need to remove the hub nut to remove a wheel unless you want it to fall off when you replace it!!!!!

forgive my ignorance! I am only a mild-car enthusiast! I know suck-squeeze bang blow haha but don't really do much on my own car!! So On either wheel i am only removing the wheel nuts and not the centre hub nut if I am changing wheels, and if there is any need to undo the hub nut then the garage will have the necessary 12 sided socket or star screw head for the rear?

In my defense I can't remember a 12 sided nut on the hubs for any previous wheels I have changed, prob just split pins or something so it threw me!!!

Yes, except they're bolts, not nuts I think.

Why don't they just order a replacement key? Unless they are non genuine.

Skoda said its cheaper for them to remove and replace, saves all the back and forth to the dealers.

Cheaper for them?

Guess it depends if the dealer is local or not.

For me it's a 30 min journey each way.

Blimey a dealer that pays for your return trips to visit them!

Thats the only way it would be cheaper for them, I was surprised to read your posting that you thought it reasonable, not a word I would use to describe their conduct.

I understand that if you were not able or willing to go there with the car they could not quote for a new wheel key.

well it looks like the #55 10pt was wrong; it's tiny compared to the nut on the car; back to the drawing board!

Surely a local garage will have the tools to remove it and replace with a regular bolt.

you can also trying hammering a smaller six sided socket on to the bolt if you are struggling to find a replacement key.
