Octavia 3 2.0 TDI 110kW cranks but won't start

Featured Replies

Hello to you all!

This is my first post on this forum and I am asking for help.

Just bought Octavia 3 2.0 TDI (CRMB) 110kW 2016. two months ago. Everything was OK until 7 days ago. I stopped at the gas station, filled it up, got in the car, pushed the start button (Kessy) and it didn't start.

It was cranking for some time without starting (firing up) and than stopped. I tried few more times, but I got the same result. Cranking without startup.

After several more attempts I gave up and called the towing service and moved it to my friends mechanic shop.

There are no fault codes. Crankshaft and camshaft position sensors are giving god signals, fuel pressure is OK.

Big service (belts and tensioners) done before 6500 km (~4000 miles) (196000km on the clock at the moment, ~120000 miles). Everything is in phase, it was checked with all the sensors after car was delivered to the shop.

We tried second key also. Nothing changed.

For those two month of ownership I had one longer cranking on the startup and once it fired up and turned off on its own after two seconds. No other issues. I was driving it normally, pulled at the gas station, filled it up to the top (as I usually do), and it didn't start after it.

I saw the video on DiagnoseDan YT channel about VVT, but it seems like that is not a problem in my case.

What could it be? What else to check?

TIA

UPDATE

Problem is in engine itself. It blew up.

How? Why? I don't know. It is strange it worked OK until I stopped at gas station. After refilling it didn't start. Strange...

Ugly!

Where were/are all the broken bits, the missing/broken off cam carrier/bearing bridge pieces?

I'm surprised when the first one broke off that it didnt suffer massive damage shortly after - locked camshaft, stripped belt, valve/piston disaster.  For that many to break off and still run is almost impossible to comprehend. It looks as if the the cam bearings and at least one of the lobes has suffered lack of lubrication, perhaps very wrong oil.

If any bits were missing, nowhere to be found, it suggests the previous owner had sold it knowing full well of the problem.

Alternatively, it could be associated with the cambelt change. Mistimed on that major damaged side (the camshaft sensor appears to be on the other camshaft on the still intact side). Valves kissing the piston crowns leading to constant vertical mechanical shocking of the camshaft leading to stress failure of the bridge pieces.

Full head off stripdown will reveal.

I am 100 km away from repair shop. I only have those photos, and don't know anything else at the moment.

Oil was changed ~3 weeks before the belt was changed. It was from big barrel, but I checked the sticker and it had right 50x.xx number (I can remember the exact number from top of my head).

@xman So, you are suggesting that this could happen from just two reasons? Bad lubrication or mistimed belt. No more options (at least in theory)?

As you are a new member with few posts you only have a limited time after posting to edit, can't remember how long, maybe 30 minutes, after that the option disappears and you cant edit the post further.

Well...I'm guessing here..could be a manufacturing fault in the casting, or something broke off first and when you stopped to fill up it fell somewhere where it jammed the camshaft. Alternatively, Water pump could have seized. On restart, a piston hits a valve (at least 2 exhaust valves) and smashes off the camshaft supports. I would expect cambelt damage or break in all these situations.

Could also be something introduced into the cam area inadvertently, through the oil filler which finds its way under a lobe. Inspection of all debris and the camcover could give some clues.

Some or maybe a lot of damage may have occurred consequently after an initial failure by repeatedly attempting to turn over the engine where the pistons were then hitting the valves.

All very strange as I wouldn't have thought the camshaft could flex enough to break those pieces, maybe the camshaft is now bent? Easy enough to check by spinning it

In any case, the head is written off, you need a complete new one. Could also be damage to pistons. New belt, waterpump etc

Cambelt is intact, as I have been told.

Tomorrow or on Monday the rest of the engine will be stripped off... We will see what they will find.

Personally I would replace the cambelt as it's probably been subjected to a lot more stress than expected.
