Power steering

Featured Replies

Hello folks, I have the 2016 model Superb and of late I am noticing the power steering is giving problems. Whenever I stop after a long drive (more than 1 hour at least) the power steering just doesn't work. While parking I need to fully turn to one side but it feels like both front tyres are flat, it is so heavy. I leave it overnight and then its ok.

Has anyone faced similar issues ? And how was it rectified. Thanks.

It sounds like the steering assistance is being reduced due to high temperatures - this is a self-protection function in electric power steering systems. Is it particularly hot at the moment where you are (seems likely from your location) or are you doing frequent turns while stopped or at very low speeds during your journey?

Thanks for your response. It is not hot at all, in fact it's the rainy season and there aren't any frequent turns. While on the highway I don't feel it maybe because at higher speeds you don't need to turn the steering much. In fact I have always felt it when I'm back home and reversing with full turn of the steering for parking.

Needs a diagnostic check ideally but a failing battery would be a good place to start,

Any warning lights on? Anything rubbing on or wrapped around the steering shaft under the dashboard? Does the steering wheel rub on the steering column trim at all as it turns?

@Tech1e Good point on the battery

There are no warning lights on. When I run the diagnostic check which comes built in it doesn't show anything (though not sure if that's reliable or comprehensive) The battery was replaced about a year back. So doesn't look like battery is an issue.

I guess I will need to take it to the service station for a thorough check up.
