AEF Engine fuel problems

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm looking for some guidance as I've got a problem with my 1.9 skoda pick up.

When driving m, the car hesitates and there's a rattle.

If you put your foot down there's black smoke them off she goes.

Starting is ok but you have to 'encourage' the accelerator pedal .

Then tick over is fine.

I changed the glo plugs recently m, 3 and 4 cylinder very sooty.

I've now replaced the injectors and its definitely running better but still have the rattle and hesitation.

Any advice?

Thanks Dave

Connect a VAG-COM scanner and look for stored errors.

This usually means the engine is running rich (diesel) or very rich (petrol).

I'd start by changing the air filter element, oh and not using full throttle below about 2_000 rpm.

Just had my injectors refurbished, changed egr valve.

Diagnostic could not connect to car, so no joy there.

Put everything back together but still no change.

I'm going to try to add a video of it running.

My next item for attention  is the fuel pump.

Any words of guidance greatly appreciated.

Video not happening!

What type of scanner did you use?

I would like to see if somebody will tell you exactly what is wrong just by looking at your video...

Again, based on what?

Hi Ricardo, my assumption that the pump is at fault is based on the work I've done (injectors, filter, check timing).

The only other thing I can think of is the pump.

I really am stumped with this.

My video shows the truck starting immediately then 'hunting ' up and down.

It runs but pushes out white and black smoke, lots if it.

The reason I would go for scanning ECU for set errors is that there are many possible reasons. Far more that you have thought of.

Read this since you have mentioned the smoke.

Hi Ricardo, yes you make a good point.

Before I change the pump I'll get a diagnostic and report back.

Thanks again.

Update on my pick up problem.

Strangely enough it's starting and running much better.

Apart from a diesel rattle and a slight hesitation now and again.

At least it's driveable.

I took it for a VAG diagnostic. The port did not connect to the computer.

The technician is as Audi master mechanic.

He looked at the engine, drove the car and advised having the pump off the engine and set up by a diesel specialist.

So that is the next step.

It might be a master on Audi but he is rubbish on Skoda Felicia if he couldn't communicate with the ECU.

As for his advice concerning the fuel pump, I wonder what it is based on... I smell rat.
