Front disc brake caliper "self locking screws"

Featured Replies

Hi,

I need to remove one of my front brake discs to inspect the brake disc backing plate - I notice in the service info that the caliper screws are listed as "replace after each use", and appear to have thread locker pre-applied from the factory.

What is the consensus on re-using these screws if cleaned up and fresh threadlocker applied, or if not, does anyone know the part number for them?

Thanks,

The disc screws job is probably really only to stop the disc rotating or falling off the hub when you take the wheel off. Given that the wheel bolts go through the disc itself and this holds the disc against the hub I've not generally been bothered about reusing them you do get new ones included with new discs though. Bit of thread locker wouldn't hurt. Often the biggest problem I've encountered is removing those pesky little screws. An impact driver is a must or tap with a plastic hammer perhaps and some plus gas release an hour before removal. Hot cold wet damp salt....you know what I mean.

No justification in reusing them other than to bring revenue to the dealers, I dont even put any threadlock on them, as has been said the wheel bolts hold everything in place and even if the screw did loosen (which they never have in my experience) it could not do more than 1/4 turn before being stopped by the wheel flange.

Many of my vehicles have been missing the fasteners when I have bought them, I have not rushed to replace them.

Do you know what diameter the discs are? There are probably a few different brake setups to choose between when looking for these screws. (I think you are not referring to the disc retaining screw as the above posters seem to have interpreted?)

I expect they are probably fine to re-use as you describe, but let's clarify exactly which screws first.

Sorry my mistake (thanks Wino)

Caliper screws holding the calipers to the carrier. I've  never used new ones before when changing discs. It'll just be required in the dealership as best practice and safety related component. If your that fussed probably on a few pounds at dealers but a drop of threadlock would certainly be fine to stop any possible loosening.

Yes the small screws that go into the back of the caliper - not the disc screw.

I know my rear pad set came with new ones, but as I'm not replacing the brake components just wanted to make sure there's not a mechanical reason for it (possibility of stretch fasteners).

I'll put some threadlocker on and ensure torqued to spec.

Cheers guys!
