Vehicle drives well in general but increasingly when slowing and nearly stopping and/or stopping and pulling away again drive is not there immediately and then clunks/bangs in. Workaround is to select neutral and then re-select D and press the accelerator gently. Any ideas what might be the cause? 2002 with 110K on the clock.

Highly likely to be down to a low oil level, when was it last changed?

It's a 'sealed' transmission unit.

It's an automatic, you need to check the oil level and change it if it's over 100k or over 10 years old.

It's 115K and over 10 years old. I already have the (proper VW) fluid, strainer, gaskets, etc. at hand. Just wanted to be sure that is likely the problem. I had read that changing fluid on an older auto transmission can cause problems?

No, it fixes problems, make sure you bleed it properly afterwards.

OK, thanks. By bleed do you mean to check the fill level when up to temp, etc.?

There is a procedure to ensure that every nook and cranny is full of oil, then once it's up to temperature you can recheck the level, it needs to be perfect.
