1.4 v 1.5 TSi

Featured Replies

Hi all, newbie here!

Am hoping to buy  at 2017ish Octavia soon. I had a 2L TDI auto as a hire car in Scotland a while back and absolutely loved it. However I don't do big mileage so am plumping for a petrol instead but still with an auto.

On paper the 1.4 / 1.5 TSI's seem to fit the bill but am wondering if there are any know issues or problems with either engine, or with the DSG box accompanying either?

DSG on those engines (DQ200) is the weaker variant with dry clutches.  Although there hasn't been many stories of late it was known to have issues where the wet clutch versions (DQ250+) are a bit more robust.

There is no official service regime on the DQ200 but it is certainly possible to change the oil in them.  A good VAG specialist should be able to carry out the work.  Usually recommended around 40k miles on the wet clutch variants.

How the reliability issues manifest themselves I don't know.  There will be others on here who can tell you.  One thing I do know is that if you are planning on keeping it for a while be very sure of the condition and any recalls that should be carried out.  My FIL got a 1.5 Karoq in manual for this reason.

I'd love to tell you but I only had my 2017 1.4 tsi for 2 months, And I'm loving it so far! Reliability wise, I bought it first hand and it had 40,000 miles on it and the person before me didnt have any major issues, the only thing I had to change was the microswitch in the gear lever which is a common and a minor thing, And it didnt cost much.

My 2015 1.4 has had a couple of issues, one was the dash warning about leaving the car in 'P', there are many threads here that go into details of the problem, it is well known and my warranty covered what could have been an expensive repair. If you buy from a Skoda dealer ask them if this problem has been fixed. The other problem I had was the Turbo Actuator Rod seizing, in fact I am now on my 4th TAR, this one seems to be okay but for how long I wonder. Again a search on this forum will give far more details of this problem. Other that that the car has  been great, no problems with the DSG box other than the above. the car is reasonably quiet, cheap to run with fair MPG and £30 tax on mine. Personally I would go with SEL or Elegance models as the added options are well worth having.
