Intermittent Start up error

Featured Replies

Hi

found this, what looks like an excellent forum, from Google when looking into my intermittent start up error.

When I start up cold it takes a couple of seconds to crank and I get numerous errors coming at me at once. Once started it runs sluggish and over runs a little whilst idling.

Then when the engine is warm everything is fine and all lights go off!!!

Any idea please?

Welcome @ABMonro66, sorry you're having problems.

My guess is a dodgy battery - there was a batch of defective batteries in 2017 Superbs, mine included.

If it's a diesel, maybe you have a fault with the glowplugs.

Hi,

@ABMonro66 Could you tell us what the error messages upon cold starts are?

I wouldn’t bet on glowplugs. Ok they could explain difficult cold start, but I don’t see the reason why the engine would have high idles once started.

To explore the glowplugs hypothesis further: Upon cold start conditions, set contact on and off 3-4 times without starting the engine. Then start the engine. If it cranks direct at idle as for hot start, then your glowplugs need to be changed. 😉

It had a new battery recently, will look at glow plugs.

Sorry for delay I thought I had notifications switched on for update but didn't

Sorry for delay I thought I had notifications switched on for update but didn't these are all of the errors that come up immediately upon starting when cold, after a few minutes running if I switch off and on they all disappear and the car runs normally.

Is it the correct battery for the car that’s been fitted.

Just to eliminate a possibility, do you have a pedal box fitted?

They can throw  up some odd errors when they start to go wrong.

Do you know if the new battery was coded correctly to your car? So the car knows you have a new battery installed.

I know it's hard get questions when you expect answers, but... Do you have a VCDS default codes log? It would be a good starting point to define in which direction to search.

Otherwise, did you open the bonnet to check if a rodent could have make damage to the wiring? This could also lead to such a mess... I faced that last winter on my wife's Audi Q3 (9 wires damaged -> 25 cuts -> 3 functions out of order :swear:)
