Keeping older car as second?

Featured Replies

Been wanting to get rid of the Octavia for a while due to not doing the type of driving that is kind to a dpf. So I've been waiting for the finances to square up before replacing it with a vrs, golf r or superb.

That could be soon but another idea has arisen. Get a golf r/GTi or similar as a daily and keep the estate for load lugging and longer distance (holiday etc).

Anyone else done similar? Wife has a car (seat arona) that we are happy with. I just want a stop gap for 2-5 years until electric makes sense.

Yes. I’ve several other cars (not a bum). But, I’d sell the one you have and just buy your golf R as an estate or a Superb estate etc. My reason being, that in my case, I just can’t be bothered swooping over, and end up just driving one of them all the time and leaving the others.
Then you end up fixing the others as they just sit not being used and so on. It seems like a good idea at the time, but depends also on you and whether you’d end up doing the same or not.
My wife also has an ST estate which is the only thing she’d have after her last Ford gave her no bother for 8 yrs, right up to we traded it in. I did try to put her into a Leon cupra 300 estate which I really liked, and may be a good alternative for you if looking at an R estate.

I get put off the Leon as all the reviews say it has a small boot. Golf not much better but at least it's square. Can't seem to find a good answer on whether they measure the boot above the false floor in the R as it's standard fit for them. If so then a Leon might be fine as I tend to leave my variable floor raised for junk storage.

Back to the question: that's what I was thinking. I can that idea and go full estate.

Thanks 👍

I did this for a while, but it's not ideal. It's expensive to keep two cars on the road if you're only using one occationally. Might be cheaper to hire a car to do those occasional tasks then to keep a second.

I had a whole thread on whether to get a 3rd car just for offroading but it didn't stack up and I took a long path to swap to a car that can do everything I need.
