Here's what's in the Haynes manual. Torques in Nm as couldn't fit the full width of the page to show lbs ft....

  • It's impossible to get the cam timing wrong (doesn't matter if it's been turned 360 degrees) as long as there are 12 chain pins between the dots on the sprockets as it shows here...   https:

  • No probs at all   Yeah, the sumps are stuck on with sealant. As you say, it should be fine as the sealant should fill any slight unevenness.

That's great thanks so it looks like they are only 20nm and 90degrees doesn't seem like a lot 😁

They are meant to be replaced too but I reused mine and the engine hasn't fallen out yet :D

Yeah I did read they are supposed to be stretch bolts but don't plan on replacing. Will keep an eye on them though 😊

Did you have to use any of the timing sprocket shims or did it look aligned ok?

I put a metal rule across the face of the cam sprocket and onto the teeth of the crank sprocket (as it's face is raised higher) and seemed to be perfectly aligned although it is very difficult to tell I think it's ok. The shims are very thin only a few microns so would probably need a more sophisticated way of checking tbh.

Hi mate no I've been working long hours and trying to do bits in lunch hour etc cos it goes dark at 4. I've got tomorrow booked off and am going to silicone the sump back on and do a few other bits. Need to check the rear brakes and find a sump washer, been to motor factors today gave them reg and they gave me a sump plug too small. Also ordered a washer off ebay which is too small. The plan is to refill the oil and coolant on Sat and grit my teeth and turn the key 🤤it's going to be a tense moment 🤣 I have also just took delivery of 2 pattern part front wings so will be dry fitting them before getting quotes for painting. Hopefully it doesn't cost too much, didn't fancy trying to rattle can metallic green. Its turned into more of a project than I was expecting but hopefully will have a decent low mileage car at the end of it 🤞 If it runs ok I will film the engine after it's all back together I did film the before as well 😁

Update...car is running now and rattle has gone away. Sounds like a sewing machine compared to how it was. Only downside is I can now hear another rattle coming from the gearbox which you can hear slightly in the video and stops when the clutch is depressed so guess release bearing is on it's way out. 😏 not sure if it's gonna be a fit job or if to take it to mr clutch but will do some investigation on difficulty vs cost etc.

So not putting tools away just yet but it's defo an improvement. Still a slight lumpyness  it think it's a characteristic of the old Skoda engine design and tuning for emissions etc.

Yes I think so but thought that with the rattle stopping when it's depressed my assumption is that's what it probably is or would you think otherwise please? 😁

Yep, input shaft bearing. They all seem to do it- it will go on forever like that. However, it's worth checking the gearbox oil level if you haven't already.

Thanks I haven't checked the gearbox oil level yet is it easy to do? If it transpiresto be the input Shaft bearing im guessing I will have to get from Skoda as can't see it on europarts. Does yours rattle as well?

Yes, mine chatters a bit in neutral. You would have to strip the gearbox to fit a new one.

 

The gearbox oil level plug is 17mm hex. I used the head of a bolt to undo mine as didn't have a 17mm hex tool.

The input shaft bearing is item 2 here...

There are two different part numbers depending on gearbox code number. You can find the code on the build sticker underneath the boot carpet and also on a duplicate sticker in the front of the service book if you have it.

Thanks my gearbox code is FNK according to the service book. Just wondering on approximate cost of replacing the bearing. Will have a ring round next week. I'm a bit gutted tbh thought it would have all been sorted with the timing chain. Bloody cars eh? 😑

I really wouldn't worry about that bearing, just do what TMB suggests and top up the gearbox oil or get it done for you.

Mine is FNK too.

 

I honestly wouldn't worry about it. They go forever like that.

Had another listen today but decided it's probably not as bad as I thought at this stage so will be taxing it December and running it for a while and monitor. Today with the help of hatboyharvey videos I took the front bumper and wings off. Didn't take long. The wings were rusted through at the bottom .... thought it was surface rust when I bought it 🤦‍♂️ but got 2 prasco pattern wings and dry fitted them. Seem like a pretty decent fit so took them back off and taking them to be painted next week. I was worried that the rust might have attacked the front of the sills but just ended being a bit of surface rust so no welding needed. A wire brush 2 coats of rust remedy and a coat of hammerite and they are fine. I got a gearbox oil top up and ordered a cheap 500ml syringe so will be checking that next week as well. Checked back take shoes and they appear to be about 60% worn so might just throw a new set on while its not in daily use as they are cheap enough. What i thought was gonna be a good service is turning into a full restoration 🤣🤣

Defo! Don't suppose you know what fuel filter is for these cars please. Think yours will be same as mine if it has the AQW engine

 Europarts listing 3 different types. One that's on it looks like be factory 😁

Mine had been changed by the previous owner (at a Skoda dealer) just before I got the car and I do very low mileage so I haven't needed to change it, so not sure which one it is, unfortunately.

I wouldn't worry about it, the old one will be fine until you finally weigh it in, they never need doing in this country because our fuel is clean. Diesels need doing every year, petrols never.
