Towing without 4x4 or DCC

Featured Replies

I have a FWD TDI 190 manual Superb. It has a detachable tow bar and 13 pin socket. My caravan is 1375Kg MYPLM. I have done quite a lot of towing but not yet with this car.

Has anyone towed with a Superb without DCC? Is the suspension too soft? Thoughts?

Also, what can I do to improve the current suspension? New, up-rated springs? I do not want to lower the car!

Standard dampers should something similar to DCC in normal, this is the setting I'm towing 2000kg with. I can't imagine that they would be to soft if you don't fill the luggage and exceeds or getting close to the maximum allowed weight (675kg if I rember correctly?)

Try towing with it at least once before you decide to change anything :)

Thinking of adding helper springs but worried they will raise the back end when not loaded/towing.

Good advice.

I tried it once, and even though mine is 4x4 (without dcc), once was enough for me. The standard shocks were removed and firmer ones installed.

The caravan doesn't bounce around now.

OP - what shockers are on yours?  Mine were Monroe....

Just called Bilstein. Uprated dampers for a MkIII Superb (non-4x4 or DCC) are £530 inc VAT and free delivery for 2 x front and 2 x rear. They are called ‘B6’.

I can recommend the B6 dampers for all normal driving or when Lowered.  They make a massive difference in every aspect.

I installed the MAD helper springs on mine and the rear of the car did raise a little bit :(

Only noticeable if you know though.

As Baverhanne says, try it before changing.  I have a 2018 TDI 190 much the same as yours, but with DSG.  The Superb is a great tow car - my Caravan is just about the same weight as yours, I have never had a problem.  Keep the nose weight to around 80kgs, increase the rear tyre pressures to the fully loaded recommendation, and you will be well pleased with the result.  Having towed with a variety of big caravans,  with an equal variety of small, medium and big tow cars, the Superb tops the list for me.  Mind you, I probably need a bit more towing experience - only been doing it since 1972 - a mere 48 years.  Happy towing!

Hi

I quite agree with Busdriver. We have only been caravanning for 20 years and  now tow with a Superb Estate SEL Exec 2016 (190) (FWD). I previously towed for 5 years with a 2010 Superb II 170. They have both been excellent towcars with plenty of power and torque when required, and also extremely stable even in testing side winds. We normally tow 4-5k miles a year (not in 2020), both in the UK and France. I have never had any issue with the rear springs or dampers. The only modification I have made is to fit all season tyres (Vredenstein Quatracs) which help in towing on wet grass across CLs and CSs in winter.

Happy Caravanning (when we can)

Cheers

Completely agree with busdriver & Paul rt. we have a mkIII 190 DSG towing a caravan plated at 1600kg no problems at all, including trip to Spain & back ( before lockdown).

as has been said, keep tyre pressures set for max load ( I just leave them like that now as most of the cars use is towing anyway). Traction is a problem on damp roads & grass but I am getting Nokian Weatherproof all season tyres fitted next week which should sort that out.
