TDI not starting? Glow plug light not showing?

Featured Replies

I have a 1.4 TDI.

Left it parked for about 5 days, when I try to start the starter motor turns but no ignition?

The battery is 100%. The only thing I noticed was that the glow plug light does not come on? Is this unusual or is the weather to warm?

I have checked it two days in a row to no avail, advice appreciated...

Thanks all!

Anyone?

Totally normal not to see the light on a direct injection TDi engine.

Try turning it over again see whats what as you may have a very slight air leak on a pipe which is allowing fuel to drain back into the tank and so you just need to pull the fuel back up to the pul. eg by turning it over.

As far as I know you always get the glowplug light, thats a concern..... pm lummox....

How old's the car and when was the battery changed? I'd suggest getting it plugged into a VAG-COM as the failing component may have logged a fault - I'd expect the glow plug light to be on at the ignition stage as I think it does a self-test?

This time of year now things are a bit warmer the glow plug on my 1.4tdi only quickly flashes on then off (less than a second). You should also hear the click of a relay if you listen carefully.

The Glow light lamp should come on at the same time as all the other engine management lights when you first turn the key in the ignition. I would say you have some sort of engine management / fuel problem that will need VAG-COM to investigate.

I have ben told...

"The glow plug light will come on regardless of environmental temperature -

Possible that the immobiliser has gone faulty, but at the same time doesnt sound like it to me, cos imobiliser is usuall to the Ignition relay as aposed to fuel...

More than likely what stig commented on - Either glow plug, or the fuse/relay for the glow plug setup."

Let you all know what happens when I check tonight!

Checked all fuses, all look fine... could it be a relay?

I would suggest changing the fuses around just keep the amps the same, Ive had it where they look fine but have gone. Also if a stuck relay try a total disconnect of the battery and a re-connect.
