My 21 superb 280

Featured Replies

I see on the Configurator the new 280 has 400Nm of torque up from 350. Should provide a noticeable increase in pace

Interesting to see you can have either a 280 OR a 272 engine, wonder why that is?!

The 272 is being phased out I believe

I see no 272 engine on the German website so I'm guessing the 280PS/400Nm will be the "high performance" option in the Superb's TSI range from 2021 onwards and 272 is just left-overs?

Performance wise, I don't see a 0-62mph time for the new 280 but I seriously doubt 50Nm more would make any real difference, the claimed figures with VAG's engines shared across multiple brands like this one vary mostly for marketing purposes as has been seen in the past and don't really reflect real world performance
(anyone remember the discussions about the supposed "drop" of performance when going from the 280PS/380Nm to the 272PS/350Nm? ), and since it will still have GPF's in it's hardly a game-changer.

The only intriguing bit here is whether the new 280 is the gen4 EA888 found on the upcoming Mk8 Golf R or just another gen3 revision.
Considering even the latest Audi S3 launched this year hasn't got the gen4 either but a gen3 revision as found on current engines (up to the 272) I'd say the odds are rather slim for the Superb to get that but you never know.

Had a look at UK configurator and both are showing. The new 280 is 3g/km lower on emissions and 0.6mpg more efficient per gallon.

Wonder if the new 280 has exhaust flaps.

If not, things are going to get a bit complicated here now wrt exhaust flaps on 280s.... Lol

If they don't have the flaps and someone wants to submit a factory order to my specification I may be persuaded to swap .... Maybe ....

Shame both are so close to the £40,000 tax threshold so if you specify anything worth having as an option you're looking at £500 VED for the first 6 years.

Hope I don't get bored with my diesel in the next 12 months. Always a remap and 500nm of torque. It pulls quite well to be fair between 60-80mph when overtaking those pesky lorries in the first 2 lanes on the M1.

I wonder whether the 280 gets MPI back?

Why would it? MPI was added for emission reasons in the first place, not to prevent carbon build-up. With GPF's present now there is no need for additional costs hence the MPI removal.

I thought the previous car remapped had more than 500nm?

Anyways, torque still need revs to become power. And power is the thing that moves the car!

The 272 did have 514nm at 2,800rpm which is much lower than the standard 272 which had 369nm at 4,500rpm on the dyno. The 272 couldn't achieve 78mpg on my commute or 1,000 miles per tank.

514nm at 2800rpm is a huge difference in power compared to 369nm at 2800rpm (assumed flat curve peak torque for stock car).

I bet you could get a prius to do 85mpg on your commute!

Without risking going OT too much, back to the new 280. I am calling it new 280 now and to @Greenliner1, it's is extremely unlikely new 280 gets MPI. You'd have to join the 280 club for the full fat (exhaust valves included) experience!
