Steering wheel angle not zero when centered

Featured Replies

I had cause to scan my car the other day for running issues, while I was at it I had a play to better familiarise myself with the software (Autocom).

That is when I noticed the steering wheel angle value was out by several degrees when centered although the car tracks straight with a centred steering wheel.

Could this suggest the steering wheel has been removed/replaced out of sync on its splines?

I tried the resetting the steering wheel via the software learning process where the wheel is held straight, rotated full left, full right then returned to straight and it made no difference to the offset value which further suggests the wheel is physically misaligned on the splines.

Quite possibly, maybe an alignment was done in the past and all of the adjustment done on one side, resulting in a wonky wheel, and then that 'fixed' by taking off and clocking round.

Thanks for that Wino, I'll wait for some more input before I think about tweaking the wheel, it may be that the splines are too coarse to make a small angular adjustment and track rods will require adjustment also.

It's not a priority job, just something I noticed and felt could be easily addressed.

If you take it lock to lock you should be able to figure out if it's correctly splined or not :)

I had thought of that and will do next time I'm out, I didn't want to scrub the tyres again after I tried resetting things electronically.
