Changing Ignition barrel, immobiliser issue

Featured Replies

Having fitted a 'new' ignition barrel (via salvage yard), i've tried starting the car;

It fires up, but dies straight afterwards.

The security light also comes on the dash (key and car symbol).

I've tried moving the transponder to the new key, but still have the same issue.

I can only think its an immobiliser/anti theft issue, but can't think how to get round it.

I do have another ignition barrel I could try, but wondering if this would be any different.

Even to get it to a garage, last resort.

any ideas?

Thanks

Have you tried holding the original key next to the new barrel when starting? If this works you may have to cut the old key down and tape it to the barrel, not nice but it sounds as though your ECU won't recognise the new key.

Many things need coding so perhaps that could be the issue. I was told many years ago, that a Toyota Yaris, if the keys were lost or something, needed a whole new ecu, ignition barrel, door locks, etc, at a cost of over a grand! Turns out not to be actually true-it is just the official way to go but you may just need to code the new barrel to match.

I did try this, in a way, but will give it another shot tomorrow just to double check.

I was also wondering about getting a new key and transponder, then reprogramming with say; VCDS (VAG COM).

Any thoughts on this being possible with the new barrel?

Thanks

Yeah I was suspecting the immobiliser/ECU, naturally the door locks might be an issue with a new key though.

I can only think of either;

1.getting a new key/transponder with software like VCDS to reprogram them to the car.

Can be done for around £80-100, at first glance.

Or

2. A brand new ignition barrel and key.

But could incur the same issue with programming.

Any thoughts?
