Battery Replacement

Featured Replies

Hi all, I`m going to have to replace the battery soon on ocatavia because it is showing signs of starting to fail. i.e sluggish starting and has developed a small bulge n the end of the battery. Before I replace it is there a radio code or codes i need to enter when I do replace it or is all the info stored on the ECU.

Radio should be coded to the car so no issues there. If it’s a stop start car the battery needs coding to the car. Otherwise I believe straight swap.

Edit I see you have a 2006. So no stop start

Thanks gav_is_con. Appreciate the help. It definately hasn`t got stop/start. unless I stall it lol.

If it’s a TDI like mine I upgraded it to a type 096/100. Fits perfectly in the space jacket on it too. I went cheap eBay 3-4 year warranty from ABS batteries. Was about £55 delivered next day that was many years back though.

Typo

Used Bosch S5 before but had one failing after about 2 and a half years. Dealer had gone bust and Bosch weren't interested.

Tried an Exide and its fantastic. Much better performance than the equivalent bosch.

I put in an S5008......... No problems and been in good number of years now....

I do keep a 4 watt solar charger plugged in whilst the car is standing.

I had to buy a battery today as mine failed. Got it from my local mator factors. Thanks for everyone`s advice and comments. I

I have a 2010 FL petrol VRS, I put a halfords Yuasa Silver 100 quid one in a few months ago. 5 year warranty. Impressed so far.

TPS recommend and sell them too. Might even be cheaper.

When my local garage changed my battery for me. He told me to leave the engine running whilst he changed the battery over.

So I didn't loose any radio settings etc.

Not sure if that's safe or not but it did not cause me any issues.

Very very bad idea!- disconnecting the battery while the engine's running can cause a voltage spike which can destroy the alternator rectifier diodes - you appear to have been very lucky that this didn't happen.

I'm not sure it is that lucky. During development, there is testing for load dumps (lead to the battery goes open during normal operation) and field decay (alternator regulator temporarily loses control, and has the energy stored in the alternator field windings to get rid of), which should cover this (for DV, PV and re-testing, say, yearly to demonstrate ongoing compliance), but it does stress electronic parts unnecessarily, and under no circumstances would i do it, because if you do blow something, even though it shouldn't happen, it will be expensive.

If you can't put the new battery on a charger for ~half an hour before you do the swap, to ensure that battery starts off charged at a suitable level - 12.5 volts according to Varta, then, if you've got the engine running, use jump leads to parallel the batteries for a short time.

Some cars lose their codes, but these don't, so code retention shouldn't be a concern..

I bought an Information saver cable off Ebay which plugs into the test socket above the pedals. I also have a small 12v battery which I have for odd jobs. Connect the cable clips to the battery and the veh battery may be disconnected without loss of coding
