ET (offset) - deviation when buying new rims

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I've been spending a lot of time researching for new winter tires for my Fabia Combi/estate 1.2 TSI (110) DSG and finally found a decent set of tires. The problem though is finding the right combination of rims that correspond to the wheel size. Currently my summer tires are 215/45 R16 and according to the manufacture details regarding my model I should use 7Jx16 ET46 5x100 for rims. According to online tire/rims dealers, when searching for rims that matches my car, I get different 'ET' offset eg. 38, 40, 45, but rarely 46.

I'm quite new to the world of cars, but is it okay to use a different 'ET' value and what is the acceptable 'ET' deviation from what Skoda suggest, if any?

Thank you

ET is the measurement from the inner wheel hub face to the centre line of the wheel rim in MM.

Wheel ET Explained

This is in MM. Positive value unless it has a - ( negative ) in front of the number. See Positive offset above for yours.

An ET of 45 is 1MM closer to the centre line of the wheel you quote as wanting an ET of 46. Nobody would notice this.

As the number gets lower the wheel sits further in and closer to the suspension/spring parts.

So if you go too low you risk the inner edge of the tyre rubbing on the suspension /spring parts.

Will 185 60 15 tyres on 6J x 15 5x100 give you more options on wheels and tyres. ET might be 38 with this size wheel/tyre though.

Thanks, AG Falco

185/60R15 is a much cheaper tyre size than the 215/45R16 and 215/40R17 options. You can also get cheap steel rims in the 6Jx15 ET38 size.

I finally managed to find the right rim and the perfect tires (Continental Wintercontact TS 860) for this cold season. Had to look under many rocks in order to find it, but the research paid off.

thank you for your replies. I really learn A LOT about my car (and cars in general) on this forum.
