280 Sportline - drive mode chasing highest gear

Since getting the car back from getting a new Littco L380X turbo, in drive, the car feels different to how it used to. It's like the gearbox is chasing the highest gear possible as quickly as possible. For example, during normal driving the car has me in 4th gear at 25mph and it seems to be changing up at around 2000rpm. I think the car probably did this before, but I wonder if the new turbo starts to spool slightly later, so in drive the car is constantly outside of the turbo's power band which makes it feel unresponsive.

 

I've asked the tuner if he can change drive mode to hold onto the gears until maybe 2500 or 3000rpm, and I'm waiting for a response.

 

I just thought I'd ask, does everyones else's 280 change up at 2000rpm as well?

I do find mine changes up a bit too soon for me in drive mode while in sport it’s the other end of the extreme holding gears way too long for normal non foot to the floor driving.

this does lead to it feeling a bit unresponsive when just trying to get up to speed after junctions etc, so much so I’m considering a pedal box in future as I’ve already tried the VCDS throttle mods and found it made no noticeable difference to me.

id love to know if the shift points could be altered with VCDS but I’m guessing that’s why dsg remaps exist....

I've already has the DSG mapped, but it focused on sport mode, launch control and clamping pressure I think. I didn't touch the shift points in normal drive mode.

I don't know how much the L380X differs from the original IS38. But I can tell you that in my case (with a tte535) this problem is very evident, driving in D it's almost unusable because it upshifts below 2,500 rpm and the turbo starts to spool at 2800.

My understanding is that the vanes on the turbo are clipped to increase airflow at the top end, but reduce it very slightly lower down in the Rev range. It's based on the OEM turbo, so there's isn't a huge difference, but it's enough for me to notice it. On a fourth gear run I'm getting 0.5 bar of boost at 2900rpm and about 1 bar at 3700rpm

 

I can only imagine how much worse it is for you.

Since airflow is reduced on low rev range, albeit slightly, this should be the cause.

I don't know if this is something that can be fixed or improved with the right map.

But I'm used to it, now I drive almost always in M or S mode. And above 2.800-3.000 rpm there is always a smile.

 

How do you fell the car now? You have already tried to push it?

 

If you leave the map and dsg as it is and add a pedal box, it’ll transform the drive of the car. The lag in mine without the pedal box is horrendous.

in sport or manual the car feels great. even just driving around in normal mode the car feels lovely, there's just no power when you apply a small amount of throttle in normal mode.

Yes, stock, the normal shift point is around 2000rpm. 

 

Used to it now and don't bother me in normal driving. If I need poke suddenly, I'd push the lever down to engage S mode. Otherwise I'd use manual on a nice road  to keep the revs where I want

The issue for me is, that while cruising around, the revs are settles at around 1200-1300 rpm, but that low down I have little response to pedal input unless I floor it and force the car to drop a gear.
 

When I learnt to drive 20 year ago, I was taught to keep the engine revs in a place where you leave yourself some room to be able to accelerate out of a problem if you needed to. While cruising around at 40-45mph at 1300rpm might be good for fuel economy, it's not great for feel and control.

 

I'll wait for a response from the tuner, hopefully he can map it out or change normal mode.

 

The problem with this car is, there's no half way house, you've got normal mode which shifts up far too soon, and then sport mode which just isn't suitable for daily driving. The alternative is manual mode, but then what's the point of getting a DSG if you're going to spend most of the time in manual.

This is a problem withh all VAG cars from the looks of things.  Fine for everyday drivers with a fabia or polo.  Not so good for a higher power or sports car.  The pedal box litterally transformed my Octavia.  Had a map put on it but it was the pedal box that openned the map up.  The response when asking for a little more throttle made it far more fun to drive.  Makes it a little more eager to drop a gear and also allows you to use the torque that is at the revs you are in.  Tweakable to remove the deadspot in the first bit of pedal travel (the main reson for installing it).

 

Pretty sure dtuk still do 14 or 30 day money back deals.  Or buy one used and sell it for the same if it doesnt work to your liking.

 

That is of course if your tuner cant sort it in the dsg tune.  That would be the best option.

That’s why I’m thinking my early next year present to self is gonna be a pedal box!

Where is the best place to get one though? I searched for the DTUK ones but couldn’t seem to find an official distributor.

Get a pedal box is probably the only way to go if you want to fix the issue. 

 

As for being able to accelerate out of a problem, that potential situation is very very unlikely. Almost all cars have revs under 2k cruising around and the only way to get more go quickly is smash the pedal. Half pedal on the superb is quicker than many cars at full throttle I imagine. You'll be fine.

I ordered mine directly from DTUK. Check their site or there’s a section at the bottom of this forum takes you directly to them. 
I paid the extra to get the Bluetooth connected version, so I have control with an app. Not sure it’s really needed though, as once you find your happy spot you won’t need to adjust it again. 
I have mine set in sport with no + or - settings. 
It means I only have to feather the throttle in normal driving conditions and has removed the lag completely, and in my opinion makes the car so much safer at junctions or moving into traffic etc. 

I've got a pedal box from Racechip.

Went wrong after a year but it  was replaced at no cost to me with the latest version.

Worth checking them out as it works very well

My stage 2 dq250 in D shifts around 2100, S shifts around 3800. Car feels super nimble on highway in D/S when doing overtaking 

Pedal box is great and I run one too, but this sounds definitely like a DSG map thing. I had two DSG cars mapped from local tuners before the DQ381 on this 3rd DSG car, in none of them I felt the DSG remap offered any noticeable difference in driveability and shifting behaviour despite having (allegedly) increased clutch pressures and reduced shift times.

On the DQ381, I thought I was going to waste my money again but I decided to find out if TVS are rightfully considered top DSG experts or not.

As I had written in my review, this was the first time I realized considerable improvement after a DSG map, in the aspect that really mattered to me (forget 20ms off in shift times - who notices??): driveability. It totally transformed the car. It improved D mode which was good, but more importantly it made S mode the best mode in the car, and one that I could easily drive in the whole day even for the most dull journeys. The car picks up my intentions much more accurately now depending on how hard or steep i press the pedal, it can up-shift almost as early as D mode when I barely touch the throttle, it will stay in gear if I am more decisive and it will downshift one or two if I smash it. It just works and makes the whole experience so much better as these cars feel easily 100-150 down on bhp when driven in D mode so the fact you can use S all the time feels as if it had another ECU remap.

In fact, most tuners' DSG maps are nothing special in terms of driveability (some are even worse than stock - even some of big tuning names) from what I have seen, so it's not un-common at all. It's really very few tuners who offer all-round DSG improvement.

Got my Christmas payslip today with some extra bonus money I’d forgotten about so I’ve treated myself (and the beast) to a DTUK pedal box. Hopefully that will bridge the lag gap for normal driving a bit until I’ve got the car paid for and out of warranty when I’ll possibly be tempted by a revo stage 1.... :devil:
