PAINTWORK TOUCH UP

Featured Replies

Reversed into a white wall resulting white paint being left on the car, but no scratches apart from some dis-colouring on the ridge.

Managed to get white paint off, using cif, which on hind sight not the thing to do!

As you can see, the paintwork is dis-coloured and on the ridge bit looks like some of the paintwork has come off.

I know how to get the paint colour code.

I have never used any touch up paint before, so just wondered on how to go about it. It's not drastic and shows up a great deal but I know it's there so would like to get it seen too.

Is it an expensive job if I took it to some kind of body shop?

Or is it a straight forward job to do myself if I bought some matching paint.

Thanks in advance.

@Timcooper55  It depends very much on your level of OCD. I'm probably 7/10. I bought a small bottle of colour matched paint for my Corrida red car and a very small brush. If you take your time and don't over apply the paint, you can do a respectable job as seen from four feet away. You know where the scratches are, so you will see them easily, but not a casual observer.

Or, you pay for one of these travelling repair guys to come and do a much better job for £100+.

You pays your money, you takes your choice.

Safest is to search your paint code followed by touch up on the bay of evil. I always get mine delivered from a bodyshop that sells on it, and have never had an issue with touching in stone chips.

Thanks for replies.

If I get the proper stuff with the paint code, will it cover the large area which I rubbed down with cif, where it is dull, to make it shiney again?

The flat part of the panel needs run over with a polisher to return the gloss. The scuff can be touched in after that, and then blended again with the polisher. Otherwise you could just get a smart repair carried out on that corner.

Please excuse my ignorance! But do you mean by a "polisher" just to get some polish to rub over to return it to gloss?

If so, can you recommend a polish please.

Thanks,

Tim

The CIF will have mechanically abraded/micro scratched the top (clear coat) surface making it look dull.  To bring it back to a shine you'll need to polish out the micro scratches in a controlled way.  I like Meguiars 105 & 205 (coarse and fine polish), you can use these by hand, but it will take some elbow grease.  I think the polisher Undertheradar is referring to is a rotary or dual action machine polisher - they will certainly save your elbow some work.

I've not used the touch up on the superb, but on the Octavia the paint was quite thick so I found it best to thin it out and apply 2 / 3 layers instead of 1 thick one.

It depends how fussy you are - I'm sure you'll make it look much better, but when I've used a smart repairers they are like wizzards!
