30mm, 12 point. Torque 70Nm + 30 degrees.

Part number N 906 545 02

When I did mine the nuts came with the new bearings. It's a very easy job, you just take the brake drum off, prise out the bearing nut cover and undo the nut. The whole bearing/hub assembly just pulls off.

Full bearing kit for one side is 6Q0 598 611

Lol I know he did thus why I said cheers at the beginning was just explaining 😀

Sorry to hijack the thread but how easy is a front wheel bearing to replace? On a mk 1 tdi ?

With the correct tools it's pretty easy, without, impossible.

does it require a slide hammer?

I was thinking of investing in one of these, because it seems like my drive shaft is knocking now, and I might need it to pull it out as well?

No, it requires Gen 2 bearing tooling. The bearings have to be fitted correctly as they will fail otherwise. You won't need to disturb the bearing if only doing the driveshaft though.

The driveshafts can be stubborn if they've never been out before as I heard they used some kind of bonding on some of them from the factory. I had to buy a hub puller to get mine out.

This is the one I have....

Yep I had same issue one was stuck solid had to borrow some tooling to get it off.

Ah brilliant, thanks mate that will be my next job after sorting the door.

I replaced my back wheel bearings when I did the drums and shoes as they was wobbling, but to be fair so did the new ones wobble it's obviously just how they are? Lol they just slide off though

Maybe not wobble but the two parts slide slightly horizontal

There should be no play at all on them. Did you torque the nuts properly?

Yes mate new out the box there is play, not sure after the nut was torqued, it was a long time ago ..

Think they came with new lock nuts as well.

Think TMB said you need a Gen 2 bearing tool kit to get the front ones off, the back hubs just tap off with a  hammer.

Something else I'd like to buy.. :D

Ive done the backs now whats a gen 2 bearing tool kit there are different sizes need one to pull it off and the other to push it back in i dont know the correct size there are a few 72mm,76mm,82mm,88mm

Ah right ok I thought they were like universal kits, sorry.

When I googled it, looked like a toolbox with all different sizes.

Looking at that part the outer diameter is 72mm, and a width of 82mm, wonder if this as anything to do with which kit you get.. I'd too be interested if anyone knows a cheap kit that'll work for this car.

I think member Wino has a Gen 2 kit that wasn't too expensive. He might tell you what it is.

That is an absolutely rubbish reason for changing bearings, Change when something is not working correctly, not just for the sake of it.

Ours have never been done (front or rear) and the car has 176k miles on it, no sign of trouble at all with them.

This is very true

72mm, I think for the bearings/tool.

When I got my car, 24,000 miles ago I thought the front wheel bearing was noisy, 'wait until it gets worse and then bring it in'.

It's still the same. Now at 139,000 and they've never been changed.

Well thats your opinion wino but in my opinion why wait till it breaks on a major component ive done 80k and in my books its not for the sake of it its called preventative maintenance and forward thinking rather than the old let it go pop before I can be arsed to fix it.
