Skoda Fabia 1.4 MPI possible Driveshaft issue?

Featured Replies

Hello all, only me, again... :D

Right so i figured i'd try and line up my next issue, basically I was driving home from work around a month ago or so, and I noticed this knocking noise, when turning right I would say,

Like a clicking, knocking noise? It sounded like it was coming from the back passenger side to me, anyway the wife took it to the garage that morning on her way shopping for them to take a look, (they took it round the block)

they reckon it was the LH drive shaft, and quoted around £240, however when she brought it back and I went to work that night it didn't sound as bad, and on the way home this noise dissapeared,

now my wife reckons it's back again, intemittently when turning she says, and she reckons its coming from the front left, I am still driving the car to work, and i have not heard it since..

so, does this sound like a driveshaft to you guys?

if yes, is it something that needs sorting asap or will it wait?

also, any ideas of the driveshaft part number as i cant seem to find it on autocarpart or carparts4less, and eBay all parts listed are showing not to fit my car.

update: just spoke to the wife and she reckons, if you turn the wheel all the way to the right hard lock when turning, it will happen again, i'll give it a try on the way to work tonight

shes pretty worried to drive it, so it's something I'm going to have to prioritize.

also it's only happening when coming to a turning.

one again many thanks for all the help!

?

Have you looked at the brake pads on the front to see if they have plenty meat on them and all is well.

Have you looked at the rear brakes since that is where you first thought the noise was from?

It's not urgent unless it fails the MOT on CV joint play.

Ok.

I did the rear hub bearings, shoes and drums maybe 2 years ago, the front discs and pads are low, but I have them here ready to change it's just getting around to it.

Ah okay mate, brilliant, I'll leave it then till it gets worse or it fails in August.. thanks

Maybe best take 20 minutes and check the brakes over again just to be sure all, is well.  2 years ago is so last decade.

Ah, That makes sence, I've just checked the last mot, and an advisory was near side CV boot perished.

Looks like this will be my next job then after doing the radiator..

Thanks 😊

Feel like I'm making progress.  Lol

Ah, that would explain it. The muck and water has probably got in and ruined the joint.

Do you know if it requires any special tools to do this job?

The nut to tighten the cv joint on the hub is some funny size iirc

Yeah, 36mm 12 sided. You need a thin-walled 36mm socket as thicker ones won't fit in the hub nut recess. Some early Fabias have a different allen-key type nut (19mm hex) - (part number 6E0 407 395 A) but it is recommended to replace that nut with the later type as they are interchangeable

I managed to use a thicker socket but I had to take some metal off it...

The CV joint is held onto the driveshaft by a snap-ring. You can tap the joint off the shaft with a hammer. The CV boot clips need a crimping tool to crimp them on.

I use a CV joint puller which makes it easier than using a hammer...

And I have this crimper which is nicer to use than the pliers type...

Obviously you need a tool to free the track rod end taper too. I know some people twat them with a hammer but each to their own.

Knew it was something like that. All I remember is that nut spinning when the driveshaft/Wheel bearing had to be swapped after I destroyed them going sideways in the fields, it was welded in place and it held until about a month ago when the cv joint started clicking. I dread having to replace it.

Ah brillitant, Thanks for the info lee very helpful!

So, that link that you sent me for ebay it looks to already have a new nut included.

I've just watched a few videos on youtube, and its doesn't look too bad :D famous last words..

update: right, I've ordered both these, the joint kit and the braket with those 3 bolts, also a cv joint puller off amazon, I'm hoping my clic r type pliars will do the job for the ring clamps.

I might as well do it the same time i do my discs & pads(there here waiting), I've just looked in my socket set (halfords advanced 150 piece) and it does contain that 12 side socket and the walls look thin ish, if its too big ill buy a 2nd one, i aint grinding my kit :P lol

thanks again, updates to follow, photos, as i do the job.
