Fabric wadding under engine

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 63 plate Fabia estate 1.6TDI, a few weeks ago the engine under tray broke a d was dragging so I removed it until I can get a new one. However I have now noticed a piece of what looks like fabric wadding hanging down I can't really find any info when googling it but assume this just another protective cover that I can remove for now? And if so anyone know how it is attached? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It's a sound deadening. There should be little black clips that are just pushed into holes under the bonnet.

Are we talking about bonnet soundproof or the sump tray? bonnet padding is held by small round black push on clips  to remove these you have to bend them away from bonnet with a small screwdriver and wiggle them off, the sump tray has a sponge type padding with a cloth type finish and is glued in place, the engine top cover is also  sponge under the top and that's also stuck in place, I came across a hard black sponge about 30mm thick  in a hardware shop that was used for packing and cut it to shape and used a small daps of unibond waterproof no nails to hold in place , still on car in place after 4 years car gone now so can't send pic's, under bonnet soundproof has to be replaced

It sounds like the insulation that is fitted around and under the sump pan & not the waffle plastic stuff that is attached to the undertray, I dont know how the former is attached but would guess at either push in plastic clips or perhaps glued, I think the former is more likely.

All you need to do is get underneath and look and all will be revealed.

Yes, it underneath the car (not under the bonnet)  my first though is that it was covering the sump. If I get underneath and for whatever reason it won't refit, is it detrimental to remove it?

Thanks for all the replies, I managed to get underneath today and had a proper look, it's a piece of wadding covering the sump, the front edge is all ripped and frayed but I managed to reattach it for now by making some new holes in it and cable tieing it. We'll see how long it last.

Hi Murdockman, regarding the foam stuff you came across, you don't happen to know what it was called, do you?
