Front wheel bearing

Featured Replies

I need to do a front wheel bearing, so I'm doing it the lazy way and changing the bolt on assembly. It's the 4 bolt fixing. Has anyone changed one of these with the hub carrier on the car, or does it need to be taken off the strut and done on the bench?

You can buy a hub with bearing pressed in for not much more than bearing on its own.

Did mine on the car. Can't remember if 3 or 4 bolt fixing. Think one of them was slightly more difficult to get at but generally straightforward. Run some emery cloth or similar around the carrier where the hub sits prior to fitting up the new one. A smear of copper grease may not harm either.

I have just done 2 on mine over weekend. 4 hole.

I took whole thing off from top strut mounts as I was doing all suspension and ball joint.

You can do it with it on vehicle.

You need to pull out CV and undo 3 nuts on ball joint to get good access. Axle bolt can be fun, mine was great one side and a right ****** on the left.

Mine was very rusty so had to put the old bolts back into bearing knock the bearing / housing out. Echo the sanding / emery paper to get new one in, as not too great under there. But mine is 10 years old.

Getting the Torque extra turn of new bolts, 70 Nm, plus 90 degrees needed a bit of muscle.

I used FAG bearing which is what I think was on there from Factory. Some good offers on ebay. I paid £54 each.

Thanks folks, should be fairly straightforward then. If I can get into the spline head bolts with a half inch socket set, it should be alright. I've done the ones on the 2k Caddy, but like yours pdmc, that was on the bench because I was replacing all the suspension (250k will do that to a van).

I've gone with SKF just because that's what the local factor supplies as their good one. Got to support small businesses and I like being able to take something out of the box and look at it before I spend money.

Not sure if either of you can help with this one, but have just put up a related post/thread about strut replacement

Yep, doing that with it on the car worked well. Thanks chaps :biggrin:
