Wireless charging + Wireless connection = Freezing phone on long trips

Featured Replies

So, one of my 1000 km’s with the mk4.

Iphone XR on the charging pad, wifi and bluetooth connected infotainment, Waze on the screen.

Long trip, hundreds of km’s, motorway.

Result after 2 hrs: freezing phone due to overheating, also freezing CarPlay.

Solution: Put phone next to the water bottle in the middle and wait for it to cool down.

Result2: wifi connection to infotainment will flat your battery.

Solution2: Put it on the charging pad.

Endless cycle. :D

FIN.

Same exp. anyone? :)

Hi,

Hate to say but get a better phone, I have a Samsung S10 and it has a protective case on and have never had this issue.

How many apps do you have running in the background as each app will generate some heat, close all the apps you are not using.

If you have a case on it? Try without to see if this helps. If not it is just a case of what you are trying to do your phone cannot handle.

Other option is to charge from the cable and see if this is OK.

I bought a wireless charging pad. Allows better airflow around the phone and it was almost £300 cheaper.

Hi,

Thanks.

Since this is an iphone, I have no clue what’s running in the background. :D

(..only Waze. Also, it was caseless.) ;)

I have same stuff, but it is not freezing.
But i noticed that my iphone 11pro is getting hot while charging wireless. It does not matter if it is Skoda Wireless or my home Wireless pad - phone becomes hot. I think it is an issue with iPhone.

Today’s anomaly:

200 km’s driven, tank is still full. :wondering:

Had the same problem with my previous iPhone 8. Upgraded it to 12 Pro Max and no problems so far.

Okay. Waze has always been a monumental power drainer of an app. Wireless charging cannot keep up with the charging requirements. So, you get an ever warming battery and high power use, the CPU's on the phone start to throttle back due to excess heat caused by the high CPU usage of the Waze app and eventually you get either a flat battery phone or the Wireless Apple Carplay will just die as it cannot work due to excess system contraints.

Not the phone's fault. Suggest you use a different navigation app.

Hi,

Thanks for the clarification. I suspected that. :(

Who will warn us about the police if not the waze? :D

Also, I wonder is it possible to join with the phone to the car “only audio” mode?

I have a 12 Pro and generally use Google Maps as I prefer the satellite photo view. However, I've found that if you run Waza first and then flip over to another sat nav app, it'll still give you the audio alerts. Somehow, I doubt that'll make the phone any cooler

Turned out I was very gentle with the gas pedal. :blush

  • 1 year later...

I have this same problem on my 2022 Superb, iphone 12 mini.  My battery health is 82% so that may have something to do with it, but the wife's iphone 13 also gets pretty warm and when I touch the charging pad its pretty hot.  What I have done instead is used the USB in the arm rest to charge the phone (not the USB-C by the charger as that is highspeed-data but low watts), but its a bit rubbish considering there is a wireless charger there.  The problem is worse if the phone is low on charge and im running wireless carplay and im running googlemaps.
