Are all standard VAG stereos this bad?

Just don't let a copper see you.

Thanks for the comments. I'll test the recommendations.

Chipping in as I upgraded the system in mine last summer, as the standard setup is, in my opinion, rubbish.

I Dynamatted most of the car, fitted custom-fit Focals front and rear, along with sub in the boot and couldn’t understand why the rears sounded so much worse than the fronts.

I also fitted an Audiotec-Fischer Amplifier which is completely configured via PC.

The amp has a setting whereby you can measure the input signal for time, phase and frequency response, so you can set it all to a flat response. Surprise surprise, the rear outputs of the standard amplifier are all over the place, and it needed a bit of tweaking to get rid of it.

That being said, I agree with previous comments regarding using just the front speakers, and with the measurements I’ve done using a calibrated mic, the system sounds amazing, and much better just using the fronts and the sub (wasted money on the rears if I’m honest).

Have a look through the Octavia 3 projects and you’ll see my thread there.

Pity it looks like a company car’s on the way and I’ll be selling the Octy after all that work!

Cheers,

Nick

I've found the radio reception is abysmal, even the super boosted  radio 2 is subjected to hiss as soon as you go near a hill. The RDS is switched on so I'd expect it to switched to the strongest signal being it DAB or FM, rarely if I select the cannel again it will take several seconds then find the strongest signal again. This affects bot DAB and FM, I wonder if there's a loose connection somewhere?

The sound quality is really good though especially on Media SD card, punchy and clean!

I find that I lose the radio when I drive down the A31 past the Hogs Back transmission site which somewhat ironically transmits the TV and radio stations for the area. 🤔

So having followed this thread, I tried fading out the rear speakers this morning on the way to work. I'm no audio expert but it now doesn't sound as bad as it did! It's a standard 2018 Amundsen set up. Interested in the surround coding mentioned earlier now...

Thanks all for the advice.

You don’t need to be an audio expert - if it sounds better to you, it is better :) ...and those rear speakers are EQ’d really oddly, check out the measurements I took!

So when you say rears Eq'd oddly can you enlighten us on what you found?

I think in standard setup (non Canton etc)  the rears play havoc with the sound if fader is in the middle because they have different frequency responses to the fronts. Then the position of the tweeter in the rear is in the wrong place being too close to the front. It's quite a muffled sound from the rears only no matter what you do with the head unit equaliser settings. Too much mid comes through them.

Like has been said big ICE Max power days was all boot subs at the correct crossover frequency for bass kick,  and some quality component fronts with tweeters up a ear level A pillar or door mirror level.

Sure, go to this post:

I measured the output signal from both front and rear amplifier outputs and you can see there’s a mid bass hump in the rear output exactly as you describe.

I also agree that the tweeter in the rear door plays havoc with imaging and soundstage as it’s closer to your right ear (RHD cars) than the front tweeter, and my seat position at least gives that rear tweeter a direct unblocked output to my head!

Had I thought about all this, I could have saved myself the part of £200 messing about with upgrading the rear speakers that are now permanently muted anyway...

If you read the entire thread, you’ll see that I’m running a discrete version of the big ICE style you mention, with front components and a custom fit sub in the boot.

Hope that helps explain it.

My previous comment hasn't really done it justice, because the difference is significant. It's changed the sound output from dogs*** to a decently acceptable standard setup in my opinion!

The rears seem to have too much mid range, no clarity, no bass etc. I'd love to say I understand the measurements you provided a link to... But I don't!

Glad that it's made such an improvement for you, and agree with your sentiments!

Sorry, those measurements don't make much sense without knowing the full process of the amp's setup.

The amplifier (Audiotec-Fischer M5 DSP MK2), is fully programmable via a PC. As it's an inline speaker-level amp that allows upgrading without modification, it has the ability to be tuned to the car, both input and output.

The measurements you're referring to show the output frequency response of the Skoda's standard stereo - the green stepped line in the top photo is front, second photo is rear, where you see the increase in the mid frequencies. The red line with the white dots is the amplifier's eq, which you then drag up and down to make a flat frequency response/output from the Audiotec-Fischer amp.

Doing the above process made it sound much better, but it still doesn't sound as good as just running the front speakers, and I'm certain it's due to the position of that rear tweeter.

Hope that helps explain it a little more clearly, and that it proves that Skoda have designed a fair amount of eq into those rear outputs causing the imbalance in sound.

Cheers,

Nick

I should have updated my comment earlier... Well, my radio woes have been fixed, I've got a dashcam with front and rear cameras, once I unplugged the rear camera it works perfectly - DAB and FM!

Chuffed to bits, cheers guys!
