Resale values looking up?

Featured Replies

Hi all..(1st topic started by me on here...woohoo!) Anyways , I bought Auto Express at the weekend (good win for the Superb over the Mondeo Ghia BTW!) I had a quick look at the car price guide and found that , in their estimation , the RS will be worth 42% of its new value after 3 years , which is the best percentage retained that I have seen in a magazine so far. Some magazines estimates when the car first came out were as low as 30%!! 42% is the same retained value as a Golf Gti BTW , which is good! Just out of interest , I looked through all the Skoda models listed , and the highest retained value is 44% , which is for 2 Fabia models , the 1.4 16V Comfort 5 door and the 1.4 16V Sedan. The lowest value is 30% for the 1.4 Classic Octavia.

i think that, quite frankly, some of the residuals quoted by car mags re. the RS were pure speculation and have turned out to be guff. the fact is, the car is desired by those in the know, there is a wait, and there aren't dozens of importers bringing them in at a knockdown price.

its a win-win for us RS owners methinks.

In the recent WhatCar? test against the Leon Cupra and the Focus ST170 they said that the vRS (have to be correct now  ) would retain more of it's list price than either.

In Autocar the Leon is listed as retaining 52% after 3 years and the vRS at 29%.

I agree with Huck...it's a load of old tosh especially seeing as you never get what's quoted for Part-Exing! :x

The residuals on the 4x4 estate worried me at first, but then I started thinking about it, You very rarely see an Octavia for sale for less than 50% of it's original price, yet they've been around 3 years or more now. The estate values are higher than the saloons on all cars because 2nd hand estates & performance models always hold their value better than the std cars (on any make).

The trade got the Focus residuals badly wrong recently with 3 yr old 36k cars obtaining mid 40's % when they predicted 30%-ish.

Residual values will in my opinion only get higher as time goes on, they're based on a time when cars became unreliable & worn out after a few years & only had 1 yr warranties. But today's cars are built to withstand twice the mileages of 5-10 years ago, and Hyundai for pete's sake come with 5 yr warranties ! If the lifetime of any other asset is extended, then the residuals are altered accordingly, cars have to follow this sooner or later !

i have a friend who was interested in a 2nd hand RS (can't get used to this vRS thing! ) but found that prices hadn't dropped nearly as much as he had hoped.

i reckon we'll be fine come trade in time.

Hmm just checked a version of Whatcar? magazine out as thereresale valures are usually pritty good. The values for the Fabia are much higher than Auto Ex quoted which seems about right the TDi's both hold onto 55% of the purchace price with the 4dr SDi sedan the worst with most hovering around 50% showing the high demand for them! The Octavia is a mixed bag mind with some I don't think have been updated from the old style Octavia. The RS is on a measly 29% which seems incorrect with the TDi's the highest with 41%. The 41% for the TDi seems right although I'd imagine an RS should hold around about the same. The Petrol 1.4's, 1.6's and 2.0 may struggle and they would be in my book around 35%. Mind you what kind of resale value do you get for a Mondeo ST220?

Just on this point , I was walking back to my car after work today , and was checking out the Skodas for sale at my dealer (over the road from my work!) They have a W reg silver Octavia in , pre facelift with alloys , its sitting at

I am due to change my Sdi Octavia in March will have about 100K Miles on it whats it worth? I've also been keeping a keen eye on second hand values and the Octavia is particularly strong all through the rangeand there still quite difficult to get.

Can only be good news for all us owners especially when its such a strong contender in the JD power/Top Gear surveys.

The taxi firm I normally use has a W reg SDi Octavia , last week i checked the milage on it , it was 193,xxx !!! Yours is barely run in!!! :D

This weeks Autocar has revised values for the Octavia.

After 3 years the vRS is expected to retain 44% of list.

I think the best was the 110 TDI estate at 52%.

Good stuff , thats more like it! Hopefully they will keep climbing like house prices!!

If a year old Mini can be worth more than a new one as a cult car there's no reason why an RS can't and I'm not joking.

Minis are in pretty short supply though, and the vRS isn't, at least not to the same extent. It also has some things going against it in terms of mass market appeal (insurance group, size, thirst, price, etc...).

I seem to recall my dad getting more on trade in for his Land Rover Discovery than he bought it for, back when they first came out.

Thats strange isnt it? In my experience though some of these %s are not realistic in practice. My BM 5 series showed 55% in A/Car whereas I was offered only 13.5 k for mine in practise against 16.5 from the lease company. So I bought an RS instead and must be ahead.

My local dealer told me mine would trade at 11k a few months ago. His second hand ones have now all gone and so has another dealers in my area. Agree 13k is the garage retail. But I don't want to sell anyway unless they bring out at a 210 FWD version.
