Hi guys,

I wasn't paying an awful lot of attention this morning and I accidentally went through a red light *Sorry*. I saw the cars from the side starting to move so I panicked and floored it as I went round the corner:( . I understeered into the kerb at about 30/40MPH. I actually mounted the kerb and then bounced back off it. Apart from a nasty scratch around the top of the alloy, everything seems fine. If I drive along a straight road the steering seems straight and there is no damage to the tyre.

Should I check for anything else in particular, and does anyone know where I can get my alloy repaired in the Luton area?:(

Thanks

Should have gone to specsavers! :P

Should have gone to specsavers! :P

Would the wheel not pull to one side if I'd put the tracking out. Talking of going to specsavers the problem was the sun shining so bright on the traffic lights, I couldnt really see anything:(

Yep I'd get the tracking checked - it won't necessarily pull in either direction, but it could be enough to cause the tyres to wear unevenly, etc so worth a check for peace of mind. Our local tyre place check the tracking for free and then charge if any corrections are needed

Muppet! Though we've all had mad moments or lapses of concentration. Treat it as a lesson and learn from it or the time, effort and money for sorting it out are merely a loss.

Any wheels that have come into contact with the kerb, jack the car up and take them off. Clean them up and look at the tyre on the inside and outside. Check for bulges in the side walls. Any bulge is bad, though 20p sized ones you can live with, tennis ball size ones need the wheel swapping for the spare. Then look at the alloy itself to check whether the rims (inside and outside again) are still 'round'. Minor deformation is probably liveable so long as it doesn't affect the drive but any cracks or deep bends that expose the bead of the tyre aren't worth taking a risk on.

To be honest the fabia is pretty good at soaking up this level of abuse, the assinins I teach are like homing missiles for the kerbs at times.

1) tracking seems difficult to knock out of whack, but a check will be order.

2) Remove that wheel and check over tyre as suggested above for bulges.

We all do it mate, learn from it.

Well Iv'e been to a Vauxhall Garage today to look at a Meriva, not because I hit a kerb of course, So I may not have the Fabia much longer anyway.

hehe, you'll be needing dark glasses and a white stick then, if you can stomach the Meriva :D

Meriva????? I have always associated them with old people who cannot get into corsa's! Not what i'd pick if I was a 17 year old again, but each to their own eh!

Well, I think the same could be said about the Skoda Fabia. It's actually rather Ironic what was said, I first saw one as an elderly disabled woman at work has one. Now I'm neither of elderly nor diabled, but the value on them is good. I can get a 04 Plate 1.8 125BHP Easytronic with 14k on the clock for £7995. I also think It looks a very nice car. All I can say is that ABS Should have been on all Fabias since the word go, I know it's standard fit now but I would have gotten myself out of alot of tricky situations due to not havng ABS. Thankfully Merivas are loaded with kit:thumbup: And theres picnic tables behind the rear seats like on a dirty old thameslink train, you cant beat that:thumbup:

IMHO since ABS was first brought to cars in the mid 80's, it should have been standard on EVERY car since 1995.

Hmm, Meriva, not my choice either I'm afraid, but thats just cos it's a Vauxhall and I wouldn't drive a Vauxhall if it was given to me. :)

Well just like Skoda they have come along very well and their current range is alot less boring than it used to be. The build quality is on a par with the Germans too IMHO

Early Fabias did not benefit from ABS On lesser powered models, such as the 1.4MPI, but It was optional. Maybe they though youd never get fast enough to need it

hehe, I bet Ford thought the same on the 80's Fiestas :D The '86 1.0 one that was my first car had the performance of a glacier but could still lock it's front tyres quite easily!

I'm (perhaps irrationally) prejudiced against Vauxhall, mainly cos of the dealer reputations and reliability concerns, much like Rover. Also, the only car I've crashed in was a Vauxhall Astra estate of 90's vintage. Pokey but it's understeer was truly horrific!

The Meriva is a fookin' AWFUL car. The visibility from the driver's seat is atrocious! There is the biggest blind spot you ever did (or didn't) see!

I can honestly say that I do not know anyone aged 17 wanting to buy a vauxhall Meriva! omg what are you thinking?

the style police will be out for you! what do your friends think?

maybe brief reasoning would help us understand....maybe you don't think you need to reason which is fair enough just would help us all to see your viewpoint.

as for 1.8 125bhp on an easytronic shifter...what a waste!

please reconsider!;)

Fabia vRS is going to cost me to much to insure, Meriva 1.8 Easytronic is only Inurance group 6. As for visibility that someone mentioned, how were you driving it? It has a further set of front windows and a rather thin pillar so I find it easier to see out of at juncions. It's also very spacious and easy to change the seats around. I might be 17, but I listen to Classic Gold and I dont intend on changing :) And my freinds think it's a nice car, theres lots of room for them

Actually reminds me of a phrase once used by Dave Lee Roth, "I tell my friends, 'my car isn't fast, it isn't pretty, I take my girl for a ride in it, it's got a BIG, BACK SEAT'" :D

are you in the scouts?

If ABS would have saved you on a number of occasions, it is time you joined the IAM or ROSPA.

Hear hear! Might also be useful to all the people who complain about understeering when they corner too!
