Superb IV

Featured Replies

Hi All I'm revisiting the forum and also looking to buy another Skoda Superb after an absence of 18 months. The Superb will be my 5th I've had all three generations including a MK1 V6, two MK2 170 DSG elegance models and my last was a Superb Sportsline 190 diesel with a DSG. It was an excellent car all round with a 50 mph easily attainable and fantastic torque and acceleration. I know I'm looking at Sportsline Plus but which engine is the real dilemma for me. I'm looking to buy an ex demonstrator as dont want to finance the initial depreciation from new. I'm thinking about the IV. I appreciate the electric only range and have managed to read various forums about that. What I want to know is typically how long will the electric motor work with the petrol engine on say a long motorway trip and what sort of mpg do people achieve on a long trip. I do appreciate that a lot is governed by your right foot and also the ambient temperature ( I am very familiar with EVs / battery performance as we have a 2020 Nissan Leaf in the household)

My general use is a 42 mile round commute and at weekends when we are not locked down much longer trips. I do like cars that have good acceleration and torque as well as reasonable fuel economy. I.e 40 mpg plus on long journeys. Is the IV a good choice or am I better off looking at a 2.0 TSi 190 or a 2.0 TSI 272 although I suspect this will be thirsty even if you don't use the performance all the time? I ve got used to the refinement of a petrol engine now so wish to avoid the diesels this time around.

Not a skoda but I have had my Passat gte for a couple of months now ans enjoying it.  As I get used to it I am making a list of things I want to change but that is the same for any car.

I have been getting 26 miles readout as the range pretty much every day.  You would only get that if driving very carefully with no lights, AC, etc.

I have a 26 mile round trip commute and use hybrid mode for half of it and generally return home with 0 battery miles.

Did my first long trip at the weekend (prepping my late fathers house for sale before anyone suggests it was not a required journey ), and got just over 50 mpg onboard readout for the round trip of 240 miles with no recharge at the other end.  That was with preheat and a full battery to start.

As fa as the driving style goes, in GTE mode (not sure on the skoda mode, Sport?) it feels much like my remapped octavia with a 2.0 tdi 150 (mapped to 180 ish).  The torque delivery etc. feel very familiar.  When not in GTE mode it feels very chilled and relaxed but still with plenty go to get you places.  A fair bit of delay from the engine firing up when asking for more from EV mode.  And be careful you dont hold the go pedal too far down as the engine will scream.  Lots of power but cnt be good for the mechanicals in th cold engine.

One thing to realise though is the variant of the 1.4 in these cars is different to the standard 1.4 and has been setup to ask for full power from cold.  This is why all the plug-ins use the 1.4 so they dont have to chnage the tooling.

The mods I have ready to go:

Spacers, 12m front, 15mm rear.  For the looks mainly.

Dogbone insert, I have one spare from not fitting it to the octavia (2 types).  I really enjoyed the benefits from this so will be fitting it soon.

I may fit lowering springs but not sure yet.  Will wait to see how the insert and spacers feel.  Just want it to be a bit sharper in the handling.

Fellow GTE owner here. Just coming up to 4 years with it. Have a superb iV on order for July.

On a long motorway run you'll average about 40mpg.

If you're on a mix of A roads you'll get closer to 50mpg.

If your journey has mixed driving with slower traffic, it's all down to your driving style. With a full charge I could get 80mpg on a trip from Oxford to Heathrow. On another day the same trip might only return 50.

It's a bit dead on the ICE engine alone, but you can always engage both engine and motor at any point by using the kickdown. I had a golf GTD before and definitely prefer this powertrain (hence ordering another!)

Thanks for the question and the answers - I'm probably (almost definitely...!) going to go down the Superb iV route next, so real world experience is invaluable.

Not sure if it's standard across the superb range but I'd recommend one fitted with XDS. My Passat doesn't have it and pulling out of junctions can be embarrassing on electric mode as it will light up the front wheels very easily. It can be a little embarrassing
