EA113 2.0 TSI issues - experts help needed please

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I no longer own a Skoda however this has by far been the most helpful forum I've ever come across so I thought I'd try my luck...

I have owned since July 2020 a lovely 2011 Scirocco R - I have recently noticed potentially a few issues. The oil smells of petrol, the oil used to reach 90 degrees but stopped doing so a few months ago (driving normal will sit at around 75 and driving fast will get up to 85 or so) and the fuel economy has gone south for no reason (when I initially got the car I could easily achieve 35 to 40 mpg and now I struggle to get 30). The car also judders a bit when idling (almost like a misfire however the revs are steady)

Only thing I can think of is bad injector somewhere maybe?

I've wanted one of these for over 10 years but to be honest it's kind of annoying having random issues like this (the car is a 1 owner with 18k miles when I picked it up, just ticked over 20k miles the other day and full VW history, should be solid!)

thank you very much in advance

Get a code reader or if you know someone who has one to scan the car for any fault codes? There is a VCDS map on the forum that you can enter your postcode & it will see if anyone is near you with a code reader.

I have a code reader and I've scanned multiple times and nothing comes up

Is it mapped?
are you getting a signal from the power train control module?

thermostat issue could cause the engine to run on a constant rich mix, or faulty temp sensor could cause similar fault.
I’d check the stat first incase it’s stuck open.
the extra fuel will get pushed past the rings into the sump, hence the smell. It’ll also cause wash, so get the issue fixed before it does expensive damage.

@UndertheRadar Not mapped, no. Sorry I'm not sure what you mean by getting a signal from power train control module? The OBD scan doesn't come up with anything unusual.

This is the thing, I don't want to just ignore it, I'd rather get it sorted.

The PCM is the module that controls engine firing etc. Sometimes it can cause a fault but not show as such.
have the thermostat or the temp sensor checked. The stat if stuck open will allow the car to run all the time on a rich mixture as it does when first started to warm up. If it doesn’t warm up it can stay on this mixture. It won’t show as a fault as the car is doing as it should when running a cold engine.
some of the stats Come in a housing with a new sensor. Not sure on yours from memory, but the stat is my best guess given the symptoms.

Ah right I get ya. Thank you very much - I'll definitely get it checked out and report back. I guess it would make sense to be the thermostat considering there are no fault codes, like you say the car isnt faulty as such, its doing what its meant to.

I do appreciate it a lot - Ive been reading loads trying to understand whats going on and didnt come across anything about thermostat. I'll get it checked out in the week, and also avoid driving until its resolved. Thank you very much

Turns out all is well - the car just doesnt like the short journeys its been doing for 6 months...

The mechanic did say he thinks the car is remapped. Does anyone have an idea of how to go about removing a remap?

Id rather have the car back to standard

My unit is at full running temp within less than a mile. Get a second opinion.
a dealer will detect a map and so will another tuner.
nothing wrong with a map as long as it’s well done. I don’t hide the fact I prefer revo for these units.

Is that oil temp or coolant?

Oil smelling of petrol isn’t a good thing, I’d be looking at the high pressure fuel pump and injectors to make sure. I had  a Mk6 golf gti with the TSI engine and normal oil temp was always 90 plus. I’d be worried petrol is diluting the oil. It was high mileage but had to have the injectors done as 2 got stuck open

I may take it to a local VW garage - theyre only down the road.. just to make sure - Id rather do preventive maintenance than let it go and then having to deal with potentially bigger issues

Not from cold it isn't unless you live in the Sahara. And when the temp guage first shows 90°c the actual temperature is well short of that but it will get there in time.

Monitoring the oil temperature on the Maxidot display is much more revealing and by coincidence I was doing just that last night, I drove 1 mile to the motorway and then at a constant 65mph, the oil temp read zero while the water temp was climbing after the thermostat had opened, at about 3-4 miles the temperature guage was at the 90° mark (mines a diesel so slower to warm up) and it was at that exact time that I got the first reading of the oil temp at 50°c

Coolant at temp within about 300yds from cold. Start car, 2min spool up. Drive off. It’s about 300yds to the end of the village and then into a N/S/L zone. Oil up to temp within a mile. It’s the DSG that plays catch up. It seems to take between 2-3miles going by live data readings.
