LPG tank arrived today.

Featured Replies

Going to have to chop some bits off to compensate for the weight though. It must be around 35kg without any gas in it. 50kg with lpg in I should think. :thumbdwn:

Oh well - should be fun. Shall be taking pics of the install as it happens, but it won't be this weekend, hopefully next,

sounds like fun mate :P you'll have to go on a diet to save weight (well your car that is ;) )

Excuse my ignorance but I thought you could only go the lpg route with petrol?

I thought your car was diesel?

Aye - works differently. Injects vaporsied LPG before the turbo, so the air becomes a mix of CO2/O2, but with an dded %% of LPG, which helps combustion.... Should see gains in bhp/tq of around 20%... all being well,

BEFORE the Turbo???

I thought Turbo's got VERY hot?

Remember the Fire Triangle?

WTF?

Well, its just air being chucked through it - the fuel is vaporised, so won't be any hotter than the intake air. :) Actually I wonder if the fuel in the LPG tank will be cooler, thereby cooling down the intake air marginally? I did query it when I first heard this was the way it was injected, and was told its fine. Its not combusting fuel, just air. :)

sounds a bit scary to me , lpg and diesel doesn't sound like a match made in heaven  but if it means less soot deposits on my car at nurburgring in august it must be ok :D

I'll be able to turn it off with a switch in the car, so it will be the ultimate smoke machine. I just flick it off, boot it - SMOKE SCREEN, flick it on, and take off. :D

If you don't mind me asking, how does this all fit in with the ECU? Surely that'll need some work?

Nope - It all operates mechanically. The only electrics are the on/off switch - everything else is nuts and bolts and screws. A T-piece will be put in my boost guage feed which controls the lpg injection rate - more boost, more fuel.

The rate of injection and the cut in of lpg is all controlled on the regulator, so shall be going to a nearby rolling road to get it setup up for optimum performance. I have been warned to not let too much lpg get in to the system as (I guess like NOS) that could lead to engine detonation! BOOOOM!

Hopefully after a couple of years it will have paid for itself, but that all depends how much gas it uses to diesel. I think its 4 to 1, so if I fill the tank to 30 litres, which is roughly as far as I can go on a 36 litre gas tank, I'll use 3 tanks of diesel before it needs filling again.

but you will probably be using a bit less diesel than you normally would as I hear its good for economy aswell. It is a weird concept using lpg with diesel but everything I have read about it is all good. Diesel car did an artical on a tdi90 golf running on lpg years ago and the results were fantastic more power, higher mpg and a lot cleaner burning so less soot. I will an interesting project for you so keep us all posted. Also are you having the filler in the boot or are you cutting holes in the side of your car.

I'm going to have to cut a whole in the bumper somewhere - probably in the vRS bumper down behind the wheel, on the side bit. I was going to have the filler in the boot right on the tank, but apparently during filling some gas usually escapes, so didn't want that whiff in my car. :)

Shame there's not enough room in the oem filler cap place to stick a nozzle in, but it really is too tight.

I'm looking forward to it, but was shocked to find how heavy the tank was when empty.

The LPG nozzle tends to produce quite a volume of gas escape when you disconnect it after filling. We use LPG cars at work. It's quite alarming the first time, but you get used to it . . . . and you don't want it in the car, LPG stinks!

yeah and like you say when its full it will be 50kg +. it will be like driving around with 2 labradors stuck in the boot (lol) at least all the weight will be pretty much between the rear axle so it shouldent affect the handling a great deal. so you gonna get a can of tyre sealant too and hope you never shred a tyre.

I already run with no spare wheel and a can of tyre sealant. :)

I am very ignorant when it comes to the LPG stuff. Are you doing it to make your car more fuel economic, or to make it go faster?

I'll give you two guesses which, but you'll only need one. :D

Go faster?

[catchphrase] thats RIIIIIIIGHT!!!!! [/catchphrase]

i'll have to make sure i'm in front when you do that , even learning the track on GT4 won't help if theres a thick sooty fog in front

 Your'e mad Jason!!  ;)

Any chance of you sending me some pictures to see how your system compares to mine .

sounds good, keep us posted on developments please

I think the amount of diesel being used will remain the same - the lpg is just going in to help it burn more completely (and thus reduce the amount of soot being chucked out). As I understand it, the LPG is only injected under heavy throttle or WOT so it's only used when there's more diesel than can be completely burnt in the engine? :D

Put the filler behind the number plate with a drop down flap.
