Rear view mirror down lights

Featured Replies

Hello,

I recently test drove a Karoq and noticed the two white leds in the rear view mirror pointing down to the console.

I believe it was a 70 plate (2020/2021) and SEL spec.

I was wondering if someone is able to take a picture of the understand to get the part number or write it down?

many thanks

They're actually in the ceiling unit, not the mirror?  That's where they are in mine anyway.   Just to give gentle illumination around the gear lever area AFAIK.

Pretty sure they were in the rear view mirror.

Though I am doubting myself now hmm, is yours a 70 plate?

Mine's a September 2019 reg - so it's on a  69 plate. SE-L  1.5 DSG.

One of just a handful in the country in Crystal Black. The faintest of blue flecks in certain light, different from the Black Magic Pearl (had that on my Octavia), but whether it's worth the extra £380 over the price for lesser metallics, that's another discussion. The first owner paid for it, not me.

I've tried to attach a photo.

I believe I saw the lights and put my hand out and assumed it was from the rear view mirror and not the top interior lights, doh.

many thanks for looking 👍

Happy to help. They're on when the headlights are on, there's no separate switch.  The individual interior lights, are around 25mm across, you can just see one on the left, with its switch next to it.  The main interior lights controlled by the doors and manually - that's the rectangular switch.

(The black curved line is the power feed for my Nextbase dashcam, that's hidden by the mirror.)

I thought that the 2 LEDS were simply to let you know that the headlights were on, Perhaps I am wrong?

Assuming that the Yeti is the same then they provide some illumination of the gear lever area and being partially sighted I find them very usefull for guiding my finger to the buttons for the actual reading and interior light switches.

I think there's a more obvious method of checking that.

NNo offence meant!

In daylight not so obvious!

I think the leds might be illuminated all the time unless car is locked, I have been sat in the car at night with the lights and ignition off and they were still on otherwise I would not have been able to find the map light button.

That said there are various timers on the lighting module, I cant see any logic in them being operative only when the headlights are turned on.

I sat in my car in bright daylight. The lights were clearly off.

I have my light switch set to AUTO so when it gets dark I leave it to the car to turn the headlights on.  (Please, no-one start a discussion here on the rights or wrongs of this - start another thread.)

I then switched the sidelights then headlights on manually and the two cabin lights came on - that's when I took the photo.

They're only on when the sidelights or headlights are on manually. This applies whether the ignition is on or off. The do not come on with the main interior lights when the car is unlocked. These light come on whether it's day or night.  They are not connected to the DRLs.

Thanks, I dont have the sensor for auto-lights, I will check when I next drive my car.

I think there is some over thinking going on here, the only purpose they serve is to add a little bit of accent or mood lighting or whetever you want to call it when its dark, same as the footwell lights, same as the doorhandle lights and lights that illuminate the vent controls you get in the Superb and other models.

The Golf mk5 had these in 2004 and that might not have been the first VAG to feature them so its nothing new,

You're not wrong there.

If you ever see this symbol illuminated on your dash, it means your two overhead mood lights are on.   :D

I checked yesterday & found that my "mood lights" were on during daylight when I started the car, HA-HA! I thought, I knew I had seen them before like that, then I realised that I had left the light switch in the on position when I had switched off a week ago on my return journey before quarantining :blush

The Yeti unlike my previous Octavias is simply clever and wont flatten the battery if I make a mistake like that, the downside being that I amy end up driving in daylight with the headlights on but they are less intrusive to others than the DRL's which are extinguished when they are on.

I think if I left the switch on in the sidelight position it would still flatten the battery, no doubt I will find out the hard way.

Same on our Qashqai, no auto lights but they did turn off with the ignition therefore no prompt to turn off the switch when removing the key and opening the door

As a result my Mrs drove around with the lights on for 90,000 miles of driving as she was never prompted to turn them off, and also, as a result of never turing them off, she never thought about turning her lights on when driving any other car. Until people started beeping at her anyway :D

TBH, making yourself more visible to other drivers can only be a good thing.

Thats hilarious :D:D

I was dating a rather strange girl, would be called friends with benefits these days, the benefits outweighed her oddities.

She wanted to drive one night and was a nightmare to be with, she spent all her time looking in the rear mirror moaning about the cars behind being too close etc & not watching the oncoming traffic, I showed her how to dip the mirror & eventually had to misalign it so she could not look behind.

The worse thing was that she did not know where the dip/beam control was or what it was supposed to do, it was a MK1 Polo which I was familiar with and refused to accept my explanation of how to use it correctly, that was one of her oddities, she knew everything and could not accept any suggestion from others thinking it was criticism.

The unused beam/dip lever control was permenantly on the high beam setting, as soon as she used the headlights she was on main beam dazzling oncoming traffic, if they flashed when she wasn't looking backwards and swearing about the driver behind she would switch the lights from main beam to sidelights that she thought was the dipped beam and of course complained about!

And there was no way that I could convince her otherwise

Just checked my 2020 Edition and I don't have the little LED down lights. Feel like I'm missing out :-(

If you have a sunroof there is no room to fit them. So I don't have them either.

Somewhat offtopic, kenfowler3966 -  you and I appear to have the only two known Karoks in Crystal Black.  I've just seen it's disappeared from the paint options across the range on the Skoda UK site. Only Velver Red as the exclusive coulour.

It was not a specific colour choice. Last car was black and I really wanted a brighter colour until I came across my Karoq in the showroom for sale whilst taking Yeti in for some service work. Didn't realise it was special at the time and bought the black car whilst I was there because of the rest of it's spec.

Yeti was approaching end of lease and decision time to pay the final payment and keep it like I originally intended when I specced it, or return it.

Is crystal black really that rare? It does look good when clean and in the sun though
