Coil Spring

Featured Replies

Hi All, One of my front springs has snapped. I've had a look online and come across onlinecarparts.co.uk. They are around the 20 to 30 quid mark. Would these be any good or has anyone bought any from there? TIA

If you are replacing the 2 springs they might be ok but to be honest my nearside spring broke at the top and when i looked at the replacement springs available i plumbed back to buying a good quality set of springs that were £120 for the set from skodaparts.com, they use genuine suppliers that also supply the group you can buy different ones on this site depending your budget , changing 1 spring of a different make would not be advisable

Thanks Murdockman

Kilen or Lesjofors (same company) are excellent, buying from Skoda does not guarantee the same parts as fitted in the factory which is just as well in the case of coil springs, brake discs or brake backplates.

Carlston is the oracle when it comes to springs, what he doesn't know is not worth knowing.

According to the Kilen online catalogue, the Fabia MK2 1.4TDI uses the following springs (different part numbers are available for the Greenline model, which uses 15mm lowered sports springs):

Front Springs (not Greenline model)

Kilen 23108 (matches OEM part number 6Q0411105AK)

Rear Springs (not Greenline model)

Kilen 63106 (matches OEM part number 6Q0511115K)

Kilen/Lesjofors are the same springs (just sold under different brand names), made in the same factory in Sweden.

Is it a hard job to change them? Thinking of doing it myself.

You do need the right tools.

Make sure you support the front of the car on axle stands, and have a trolley jack with a 75mm x 25mm rubber pad (adult hockey puck).

The junior hockey pucks are smaller than the adult hockey pucks at 60mm x 20mm.

There's also a tiny 38mm x 13mm (1.5" x 0.5") version.

I've got all three sizes, which come in handy for use with the trolley jack to protect the car.

Other tools you will need include a coil spring compressor. These two are quite good, as they both have an acme thread, so are both durable. Coil spring compressors that use an ordinary thread don't last long as the thread tends to chew themselves up and self destruck.

There are also other tools that you will need specific to the job.

I haven't changed front springs on the Fabia, so for more specific advice you will need to ask someone else.

Depends how handy you are. If you’re not, don’t bother.

Front springs were changed 2017 with Kilens,  cost 40 ( springs)+ 80ish Labour.

Comparing the total cost, it's too risky if anything goes wrong while working on the springs.

Sometimes if a spring breaks at the top - front springs only - it can displace/damage the top bearing.  This happened on my Greenline but fortunately, due to having broken springs on my previous Fabia, I was expecting this and purchased new bearings. I have previously used the 14173 type but found that they can slip around the coil quite easily. Changing springs can be quite dangerous if you are not carefull.

This is why I said don’t bother if the OP is not handy with the tools. A poor tool kit would also put me off the job.

The safety element really can’t be overstated!

Here’s one I came across a couple of weeks ago

Thanks for the replies everyone  If it's only £80ish in labour I think I'll get it in a garage.
