Welcome to folding Fullfat

Welcome Fullfat, keep up the good work.

Cheers for the welcome.

Thought i'd give it a go as most of the time i don't need both cores of my cpu, especially when browsing Briskoda for the time that I do!:D So one core is now crunching on this.

It seems to be doing one WU a day, is this about average?

One a day is about right, good use of the dual core pc.

I've been trying to get the other core working at the same time but although i've read the faq's i'm either too impatient or dumb to get it to work!! I didn't really understand the quide on here either. Are there any clear instructions as to how to set it up?

To use the 2nd core, you must use the console client (fah503-console.exe)

Download onto pc, then create a folder somewhere C:\ is good and call it folding.

Goto a dos prompt (start > run > cmd)

cd c:\folding

fah503-console -configonly

run through the options entering username, team number etc. When prompted to run as service enter yes. When prompted for advanced options enter yes. One of the advanced options is processor number, enter a 2 (default 1). Now keep hitting enter untill you get back to the c:\folding prompt.

Restart pc and voila it should work.

 Oh no! I've just found out that it doesn't resume calculations of the same WU when I had to restart my computer. So i've just lost a whole load of crunching time!! Damn!

It shouldn't do. It dioes an auto save every few minutes. Its one of the settings you can alter in the advanced setup (save every [5-15] minutes)

How do you know for sure its lost it? You might lose a few minutes of work, but not an entire unit? Check the FAHlog and FAHlogPrev notepad files for clues as to whats happening when you restart, and the task restarts.

Hmm, having a look at the log I think it points the finger at me trying to get the other core working with the console client last night/early morning!! Now Mannyo has written those instructions i'm gonna try it again, but I think what happened was it was trying to do the SAME WU with both cores so it all went and got confused!

I think you need a folding1 and folding 2 folder, both on C drive, and both containing the executable you download. Then, as each one starts up, you can give them the different machine IDs.

Ok, I now have one graphical version running on one core using id 1 and the console version running on the other core machine id 2 as per Mannyo's instructions. The console version is in a different directory to the graphical version.

Both versions are now running on each core but they appear to be working on the same WU. Is this correct?

I got the impression that each core would work on two different WU's.

It is possible, they may be working on the same project, but a different unit of that project.

Damn, something is not right. The console version seems to 'corrupt' the graphical version and make it reset its current WU. Therefore i've just 'lost' 2500 frames!! They are in different folders and I have followed those instructions exactly! This is frustrating :(

As long as they are in different folders, and the CPU number is different it should work fine together.

Yep they are. It's just not working. If anything it seems to be using all my resources but slowing down the work rate!! It's predicting August completion of 1 WU with them both runnning and the console version keeps coming up with errors and trying to restart the same WU that the graphical version is running. When I halt the console version the graphical version gets back up to speed! I think i'm gonna have to give up and leave it to one core operation for now! :(

Don't bother with one of each - run two console services - much easier. Uninstall the graphical one, and copy the DOS exe bit from the cuurent folding folder, and paste into a new folder called "folding2" or similar.

Then go through it again. I successfully took tinkerbell through this on MSN last night. :)

Cool, i'll give that a go once the current WU has completed.

and the early hours of this morning too ;)

Got the laptop to set up yet too...... so await further harassment later this evening

I keep forgetting that mine actually does this! lol! Prob why it's so slow! ;) haha!

I look forward to it.

With the console version are you guys running 5.02 or the 5.04 Beta versions?

I look forward to it.

Managed this one on my own   What a clever little fairy :D

The "newer" one - I guess thats 5.04?

Yay got it working! Well it seems to be anyway. I've set each console to work at 80% just to keep the heat heat down a little! I'm overclocking my 3800 X2 from 2gig a core to 2.5gig on stock volts and designed it as a silent PC so my Zalman fans are running on min speed, which has been stable so far but I don't wanna push it too hard at the mo ;)

How do I monitor what the console versions are working on etc?

How do I monitor what the console versions are working on etc?

Go into each folder while they're working and there's a notepad file called "unitinfo" - This tracks the %% progress and also has the name of the core, which can be looked at on the Stanford site, to see the points value (not got that link to hand though)

You can also access the one called FAHlog, which shows times when things happen (like completing 1%, and just times its stopped/started, etc)

Cool cheers. :thumbuo:

Currently it says the WU's will be completed on July 7th , I hope it's wrong!
