The Great Electric Leap Forward

Featured Replies

It will be interesting to see just how much Tesla ownership in the UK jumped up when the new government data is published in April. (Probably at the end of April).

Even as recently as 2018, Teslas were pretty few and far between, but I see them a lot nowadays.

Wow! Tesla sales really HAVE jumped. Deservedly too, I'd say.

Either they're going to have to spend a fortune on this (which after all the COVID-19 related borrowing to pay people to be furloughed, means borrowing will be massive) or it ain't going to happen.

A cynical government might borrow it anyway and then fluff the next election and pass on a poisoned chalice to the next administration. Wouldn't be the first time it's been done.

Orders for EVS on lease have now overtaken ICE cars showing that the UK, if not the world, is changing quicker than some thought and it is the economics of it not just a fad.

Orders for electric vehicles overtake ICE cars

https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/latest-fleet-news/electric-fleet-news/2021/07/19/orders-for-electric-vehicles-overtake-ice-cars

Orders for diesel and petrol cars at Zenith in June were surpassed by those for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for the first time.  The top 10 FN50 leasing and fleet management company says that pure electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for more than half (54%) of orders in June, compared to almost a third (32%) in the same month last year.  Over the past 12 months, Zenith reports that 41% of orders were for BEVs.  Demand for electric vans also increased in June to account for 69% of van orders compared to 1% in June 2020. Over the past 12 months, demand for fully electric vans has built to account for almost one in three van orders.

Lots of kidology going on regarding the EU / Europe.

Lots of Orders are by Dealerships so actually the Manufacturers.  The cars will get to customers new or used eventually, but first and foremost they will be 'First Registered' ASAP.

They are getting ZERO Emission and Lower Emission Hybrids first registered because they are crapping themselves over the penalties if they do not reach the Average C02 g/km figures required.

Just spotted a medium sized DPD Electric delivery van.

It had a Green flash Registration plate and a colourful wrap but no idea the make of the van.

EDIT.

It was one of these.

Not sure if confirmation bias, but seems like most of the branded vans I see doing deliveries around here North London are now electric.

What do you guys think of the green "flash" on license plate for zero tailpipe emission vehicles?

@wyx087  Around my area there are lots of Green Flash reg plates now.

They tend to go along with drivers that drive with just DRL's on when they should be putting on headlights,  who do not indicate and who when driving MG's tend to dither at junctions.

Probably down to so many with cars from Motability now driving EV's.

When I replace my Octavia with a BEV, if these green plates are still around, I'm tempted to swap the Leaf plates to same style so they match.

It's virtue signalling, nothing else. Just to rub it in with neighbours. (who have objected to ULEZ and another runs a Jag V8)

But but but that will use electricity and reduce range.

@KenONeillThey certainly seem to think so even though they have standard batteries, often the best of lights that really are not using very much energy.

Reducing range driving about town is really not much of a concern to many, not something that would be likely to enter what brain cells they have.

It just happens that many now with EV's seem to belong to what would have been a Blue / Pink Rinse Brigade or String Back Gloves.

The Maxus vans are owned by SAIC, so essentially Chinese EV.

Kind of goes with the great leap title :)

More seriously though, the fact that SAIC are getting a foothold (however small) should worry Ford, Vauxhall, PSA (Or whatever they are now) and VW Group, who as far as I'm aware don't have a strong electric van offering.

Mercedes have electric vans like the e-Sprinter or e-Vimeo(?) but I think you are right about mainstream manufacturers being left behind. These guys gave backing of a large delivery company and Amazon have partnered with Rivian to produce a bespoke delivery van.

Scottish Water will need to be replacing their Kangoo EV's which they have had for over 3 years.

Pretty pathetic range like many of the Local Authorities Light Commercial where carry tools and stuff is an issue because the range in winter is so pathetic.

44 kWh Kangoo goes on sale in a few months.......

https://www.parkers.co.uk/vans-pickups/news/2021/renault-kangoo-electric-van/

Can use 100 kWh charger at 75 kWh charge rate to give 80% charge in 42 minutes so getting better, I would expect to see substantial updagrades even 3 years/1000 day in line with fast improving tech.

Those with green tag pates round us seem to be the one trying to keep up with next door...   you know the sort all designer labels and 'must-have's.

I find it rather ironic / interesting that they'll proclaim their green credentials and yet still overpay a fortune for stuff they don't need and only use once or twice that has been hypocritically shipped half way round the world...

But each to their own, I'm sure there are some of them that are truly green ...

Oh and the article lol-lol quoted and linked to was, I believe, just related to vehicles provided by Zenith and not for all UK leased vehciles...

I hadn’t heard of UK based Arrival, but I hope Uk gov and local councils take note and support a UK company.

Agreed. If they can corner the market in delivery vans in Europe, it would be brilliant.

Standard Sprinter Progressive's start at £31k so the eSprinter is double!

I was reading yesterday the the Government will be giving £2 million for a study to fit trucks with pantographs such as seen on trains and trams.
Knowing Government projects, the finished project will be over budget and way past it's due date. Might be worth a feasibility study into pantographs fitted to submarines given the recent climate :D

'2 million to draw up plans.   not to design a scheme, that comes later.'

That will be right, pass some palms with silver.  They will be scheming now how that can be spread among a few.

UK will lead the World.  2017.  Well that never happened.    Billions has been creamed off already.

Two million for typing "trolley bus" into your browser; I'm in the wrong job!
