Extended warranty

Featured Replies

My Kodiaq Edition, is 3 yr old next month ... thinking of buying it (bubble purchase) and have received email pushing extended warranty.

What is the view on the extended warranty ? Worth it or save the money.

Not had a single thing go wrong in first 3 years, had all services by the main dealer.

I have a similar dilemma and asked a similar question to yours recently.

I was informed that had I taken out an extended warranty when the car was new, then it would be the same as a new car warranty. However,  taking it out now means you won't get the same cover as a new car warranty.

So check the small print before committing and maybe look at warranty companies to see how their terms and prices compare to Skoda.

I haven't checked  this, but apparently an extended warranty comes from another provider, not Skoda themselves.

Like you, I've had no major problems with my car, although it's done little mileage,  so I'm inclined not to take out a warranty

Approaching 30,000.  Just had its service & 1st MOT ( 3 weeks early)

Tempting to run it without warranty, but get full breakdown cover.

I would have got a new one, but they have no 5 seat version that can tow 2.2T

I've always kept cars from new for a minimum of 10 years and never considered taking out an extended warranty.

But over the last couple of years and reading about various issues experienced by Briskoda members I started to get nervous about the expensive tech fitted on my Superb. Even something simple as a faulty folding mirror, led light cluster, electric boot strut , etc would cost hundreds to fix, never mind infotainment, ACC, turbo etc. which could easily be £1000+, an engine or gearbox might be thousands.

So before it was too late I checked out the Skoda extended warranty, expecting it to be expensive.

It was actually surprisingly dead easy to get a quote online

Mine came back at £182 for thee all component cover option, zero excess and up to 15,000 miles. Which is about half of what the factory extended cover would have cost had I taken it at point of delivery.

Interestingly the price is the same to start cover any time up to 30 days after the original vehicle warranty expires so you could in theory delay it 30 days - sort of effectively 13 months cover. When I put a start date in that was past the 30 day limit, the premium quoted doubled.

Do download and read the booklet carefully though, it's full of all sorts of exclusions and get outs. It must be a sudden failure, there is no breakdown cover included etc. It is not transferrable if you sell the car and you must maintain a full service history to Skoda requirements using all the right stuff, which to most people probably means main dealer servicing.

On the basis that virtually any failure costs more than the premium, I thought it was probably worth it though I do realise it has its limitations.

From what others have posted, they invite you to renew annually and it looks as if the cost remains roughly the same each year, (presumably if you havent claimed.)

It is a Skoda financial services insurance product, backed by Volkswagen something or other, its all in the booklet.

My experience is exactly that of Xman. I never keep cars longer than 3yr but at the time had decided to hold on to the Octavia. A reduced price warranty was offered which I could take out at anytime upto 30 days after the manufacturers warranty ran out.

I've read people say it's not the same as a new car warranty. Why do they say that? What do they want you to do, borrow H.G. Well's Time Machine and go back three years?  And what differences are there between the two warranties? They imply the new car warranty is something far better but if you read this forum, you'll be sick of people sayng "typical Skoda, the warranty didn't cover the fault".  So what's so good about the new car warranty compared to the used warranty?

I had a good look thru the Extended Warranty booklet and compared the cover to other popular 3rd party warranties. The warranty provided by Skoda is every bit as good ( and much better in many cases ) than those 3rd party warranties despite those companies wanting almost £400.

At the end of the day it's just an insurance policy but if you want to be covered then in my experience, you can't do much better. At £180 odd quid it was a no brainer to me.

I’m so pleased I bought extended warranty (actually aftermarket, not manufacturers, but via the dealer) with my Volvo.  OK, the car was 6 years old, but had only done 28000 miles - it was a model no longer made, but I wanted a full 4 seater folding hardtop convertible.

Anyway, the dealer offered me 6 months warranty, and I bought a full year’s 5* cover from WMS for £229, the dealer paying half as it only extended theirs by 6 months.

I renewed it each year, thankfully!  £1000 limit per claim, but no limit on number of claims.  I had to make many claims over the 4 years I had the car, including turbo, anti skid system, complete software reinstall, etc, etc.  The last year’s premium was £299, but I was well ahead, it had paid for itself several times over.

Needless to say I bought extended warranty with my new-to-me 3 yr old Octavia.

But then again, I never buy it on things like washing machines or TVs, I rely on statutory rights...

Plugged the details into Skoda calculator, based on my Edition with 29k current mileage, All component warranty

10 k mileage pa   £0 excess      £387.21

10k  mileage pa   £100 excess  £326.16

15k mileage pa   £0 excess       £403

15k  mileage pa   £100 excess  £339.16

You can also pay monthly for 10% increase .... useful if you may not keep for 12months as warranty is NOT transferable.

Booklet confirms:

ŠKODA Extended Warranty Cover from ŠKODA Financial Services is sold and administered by Lawshield (UK) Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.ŠKODA Extended Warranty Cover is underwritten by Volkswagen

No limit to claim other than claim must be less than full market value.

If you have All Component Cover the maximum we will pay per claim and in total in the period of cover is the market value of your vehicle including VAT.

Attach a copy of the conditions boolet in case anyone interseted.

An interesting compariaon is that the LandRover equivalent is £650   ... (they are afterall bottom of reliability league)

Over twice as much as my Superb petrol 1.4 manual!

Might be because yours is Diesel, DSG, 4x4 maybe and already covered 30,000 miles (mine had only 6,000 miles) and its a more expensive vehicle. Or maybe Kodiaqs are generally more expensive to repair or more unreliable than Superbs, who knows.....

Also the difference with excess is a lot more than I was quoted.

One thing to note is the terms and conditions have been changed several times over the last few years. The latest change is effective from today 1st April. No idea what has changed but previous terms are available to download if someone could be arsed to compare. Probably more exclusions and conditions.

. Could see older t&c’s but would not be relevant to a new contract, so did not look at them.

So are you going to go for it?

Not decided yet .... will look at 3rd party to see if price is fair one.

Yes, that's correct if you go thru the system to buy it, but didn;t you receive a special offer from Skoda in your email?  They typically send it out 6 weeks before the original warranty expires and as said above, the offer lasts for 30days after the original warranty expires. Perhaps they've stopped it now? Who knows.  Why not phone them and ask?

If I remeber correctly the £180 odd quid for me was on a 1.4tsi Octavia, annual mileage of 10k, full compoent cover with no excess.  I seem to remember the 'named' component cover and excess price was something like £140 odd quid.
