how to check mileage?

they will have put new tyres

Check what make  / quality tyres that they might / will fit.

See if you can get what you want not what they choose.

It is not possible to clock the mileage on a S3 Superb, and that statement is my justification for another long-winded story.

When I bought mine at 6 months old from Arnold Clark, the salesman took it to the nearest fuel station for £25 worth of petrol. When he came back he said that the fuel gauge wasn't working, and the workshop decided that there was nothing wrong with the tank sender. This, apparently, meant ordering an entire new instrument cluster from Skoda - they'd let me know when it arrived.

I subsequently got the phone call, and arranged a date for the work. Now, it's at least a four-hour drive from my home in the highlands to the dealership in Paisley, and they want the car for 8am, so we drove down the day before and stayed in a hotel for the night. The job was done by mid-afternoon, BUT when they entered the mileage into the new instrument cluster the car assumed it was kilometres and converted it downward to miles. This meant another four hours each way, and a night in the hotel, for another new instrument cluster.

This time I suggested that if they increased the the mileage input by a factor of 8/5, the car would make the same assumption as before and convert it to the correct mileage. Of course, me being just an ignorant punter, the suggestion was ignored, the same thing happened, and yet another new instrument cluster was ordered - it has been suggested by another dealership that these things are probably about £1000 a pop!

So, another four hours each way and a night in the hotel. This time, though, because this problem had never happened to anyone before, a guy called Radic in the Skoda factory in the Czech Republic was going to write a special programme to overcome the problem and instruct the Arnold Clark technician live over the internet - Radic was the only person in the world who can do this!

On the day, I got a phone call from the dealership, while I was enjoying my hotel breakfast, to say that Radic had called in sick. I was given a rental Passat 1.6 diesel to go home in, presumably so that they didn't have to put the Superb's dash back together again, and got a call a month later to say that my car was ready, with the correct mileage showing at last.

So there you are. They wouldn't have put in all that time and effort, plus three grand's worth of instrument clusters, plus a month's car rental, plus reimbursing all my fuel and hotel costs, if it was possible to just clock the mileage reading ....... WOULD THEY?

It certainly is...

Unlike older cars, I don't believe it's possible to change the odometer to any value you want.

However, there are options to prevent the odometer increasing and it's trivial to increase the odometer by sending a appropriate CAN messages simulating a moving car :)

The biggest problem is that Skoda/VAG limit the options for their dealers. There are plenty of 3rd party tools that can do things the dealer tools can't or aren't allow to...

so i suppose its down to what we did when we went the auctions years ago and check how worn the steering wheel is and have a good look at the driver's seat for wear.

Plenty of people on the bay of evil and Farcebook can clock these vehicles, there is a facility in VCDS to interrogate the ECU to find out the actual mileage the engine has done as opposed to what is showing on the instrument binnacle.

Yes an ECU could also be changed but you would have to find one with the exact mileage that you wanted as well as having the instrument binnacle hacked.

I fitted a reprogrammed ECU for a remap on my MK2 Octavia & kept the original as a spare, the mileage did not change on the instrument binnacle but if you check using VCDS it showed the higher mileage of the donor vehicle.

I explained to the guy I sold it to that the speedo was correct & what would happen if someone checked using VCDS, I also gave him the original ECU.

It depends on the ECU and if it keeps a record of the mileage covered.

AFAIK, the engine ECU in a MK3 Octavia/Superb and other similar MQB vehicles doesn't keep track as mentioned here: https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/26571/

Number of previous keepers is Zero.

So you would be the second owner.
