Is it worth having a rear wiper on a 2020 Octavia Hatch?

Featured Replies

I'm getting one soon and it doesn't come with the rear wiper. Can it be added later by the dealership if I want it? Is the motor still there?

Is the rear windscreen already treated with rain repellent or do I need to purchase some?

Thanks!

Are you getting a stock car which didn’t have the free option ticked?
otherwise just tick the option box. 👍🏼
I doubt very much it can be retro fitted and would say the motor 100% won’t be fitted to cars with no wiper.

It's from stock so the wiper isn't on it, can't option it.

Ah, I reckon it’ll be difficult to retro fit but a dealer would be the ones to ask for a definitive.

Hope you get sorted.

Skoda themselves must think it's not necessary for clearing the spray when on a motorway, but I can't see the logic of missing it out and having to create two different boot lids or tailgate glasses (not sure where it's mounted).

Vauxhall have done the same on the Insignia - I had one as a hire car a couple of years ago which I picked up on a damp, dewy morning. It was really inconvenient not to be able to wipe the dew off.

Are you desperate for the stock car? The prices are generally the same as cars built to order, so unless you need it immediately, would it be better to wait and get exactly what you want - or keep an eye out on the stock car listing at vwfs drive?

Speaking from a Mk3 POV, my rear wiper has been used once.  And that was when the dealer tested it during a service. The shallow hatch shape renders it pretty useless. IMO anyway. I wouldn’t be losing sleep over not having one.

An emphatic yes!  I use mine all the time.  When it isn't raining heavily, the water drops stay on the glass and pretty soon, you can't see out.  Heating it doesn't help.  I am surprise it not already on your car.  My Mk IV First Edition came with it fitted.  It's free but you have to tick the option box, so I have been told.

See that's the thing. Some people say it's really helpful, others barely notice. Do you use rain repellent?

Unfortunately I have no choice. Going through a leasing company so they bought the cars stock I believe.

I don’t use a dedicated rain repellent but I do coat the whole car in a spray sealant every 6 months with top ups in between. So the water just runs off.

Spray sealant? Interesting. Do you have a link to the product you use?

No, I don't use rain repellent.  I don't see the point when I have wipers.  Besides there's more chemicals to go into the environment.

I had a civic for a few years without a wiper that was regularly treated with rain repellant.  It was a pain so I would always make sure I had one on any future car.

Always handy to have a rear wiper, the water off the roof always runs down the rear screen at speed and the rear wiper clears it away. Of course a rear wiper is useful for clearing away bird poo and dust, much like the front wipers.

I guess due to the aerodynamics of the new mkIV, Skoda decided that a rear wiper wasn`t entirely necessary. But Id have one....

Hi, just have mine for a month, but used it in both rain and snow. I would not go with a hatch without a viper, water from the roof is flowing all the time so im happy that i ticked that option.

2k done on my hatch now with no rear wiper. Don’t miss it and think the car looks better and cleaner without it

I don't have it on RS, but civilian O2FL, 2xO3 and now O4 have it, we were unable to "un-spec" it, arrived as is from the dealers.

Let's say, not completely useless, but mostly it is. But, what is a fact, it makes the rear of the car so much uglier, that little usefulness of it can't compensate. Normally liftback cars don't need it, only water can be there, dirt from the road never sticks as it does to the hatchbacks.

To be fair, I think the rear wiper was a no cost option on the Mk3 too.

MK4 SE FE owner without a rear wiper and I can assure you they are not needed at all.

Any standing rain water disperses while you're driving and/or burns up within minutes using the rear heater. If it rains while you're driving it doesn't gather anyway.

Don't waste your money.

Every car I have had before this had a rear wiper, but I could seriously count on two hands how many times I've bothered ever using the wipers over two decades of driving.

Its a FOC option so no money to waste. Remember it also has a washer.

I decided to have a rear wiper on my Superb 3 hatch which is the original external design the Octavia 4 is cloned from, albeit somewhat unsuccessfully.

It is not used too often. Then I garage my car, most of the time.

When stood out overnight, it is useful to clear the back window when.....

We have the usual windy mix of saharan dust, farmers field and light rain, leaving an opaque coating/mucky window. Hey, theres a washer, why not use that?

When stood or parked in rain with HGVs bombing close past, again instant whiteout at the back.

When we have a snow fall or frost overnight.....

When the roof is covered with nice large beads of water after rain  or washing and the first time you move off it keeping runing off all down the rear window for the first mile.

If its torrential downpour on the motorway and again its streaming down off the roof down the back.

When birds have pooed on the back window

Is it law to be able to see out your back window?

You can always remove it, but you can't add it on after its built.

But thats just me. I don't spend any time staring at the back of cars from the outside, if an Octavia or Superb hatch passed by me, would I even notice if it had a rear wiper or not? No...only thing I might notice is the colour or how chavvy it looks if its been lowered. ;)

Oh, I forgot that it may put people off come selling it (privately) if its not fitted.

No legal requirement to even have a back window (hence panels at the back on many estate cars, car-vans, regular vans etc.

Personal preference, I don't have one and it doesn't bother me, I use gtechniq g1 on my glass and the water just streams off, use the repellant for making the glass easier to clean but added benefit is water literally just slides off

I’ve had my VRS for two weeks and live in Bonny Scotland and haven’t felt I’ve needed it as of yet, not put any sealant on it yet it’s not bad at all :)

Water doesn’t seem to sit on the back window too much, would be an issue if you weren’t to wash the car often and it got dirty otherwise think you’ll be fine!

1. No. In my view it's an ugly superfluity.

2. The aerodynamics seem to clean the rear screen pretty well. With or without magic polysiloxanes.

3. I have replaced a number of VAG and other rear wipers over the years. The material selection for the hollow spindle affair used to supply water is always driven by accountants rather than engineers. It breaks.

4. Never had the joy of supply pipe joins failing and slowly filling spare wheel wells with water. after they've saturated the boot carpet.

5. No semicircular scratches on the rear screen from a gritty rear screen wiper.

6. But I wouldn't remove it if it came with one fitted!
