Car is randomly locking itself - struggling to diagnose

Featured Replies

So I have a very strange issue that I am struggling to diagnose. The car is randomly locking itself.

I have been out to it with the VCDS cable and as far as I can tell it is correctly reporting the status of all four doors and the tailgate.

On the adaptations screen, both auto-lock and auto-unlock are turned off, although I'm not exactly sure what these settings are refering to.

The issue doesn't seem to be consistent either. On one occasion it locked exactly 20 seconds after being unlocked, suggesting it didn't know the door had been opened. On another occasion it took over a minute before it decided to lock itself. And on another it locked itself again only a couple of seconds after I had just unlocked it again.

This occurs regardless of whether or not the key is inserted into the ignition.

I think I can rule out it being triggered by the keyfob, as the indicator lights do not flash when it locks, unlike when you actually press the button on the keyfob to lock it yourself.

I'm also not sure if it related, but it seemed to start doing this around the same time the battery completely died (was approx 9 volts) and has continued to occur even after it was replaced with a brand new one.

Everything else on the car appears to be functioning correctly.

Is there anything else I can check or try before I give up and take it to the boys at the garage to look at?

I have MK2 and mine randomly would not lock or unlock, carista diagnosis hint the alarm horn, after replacing to-date no problems.

Ive notice that locking on remote the beep is significantly louder, us yours quieter?

New Skoda  alarm was expensive, £160.

If you can solder you could repair your alarm by replacing the alarm battery. Note the battery only lasts about 5 years, mine was 10 year-old.

As far as I am aware it has no alarm. It has never made any beeps when locking or unlocking during the entire time i've had the car.

The car has never refused to lock or unlock, it just locks itself at random without being commanded to do so.

I should also note that VCDS did not report any fault codes for the 46 Central Conv module either.

Minimal help with the issue at hand but auto-lock and unlock is where the doors lock themselves once a threshold speed is exceeded, and then refuse to let your passengers out when you stop!  Anti-hijack feature that I turned off in my Polo as soon as I learned how.

It sounds a bit like a dodgy connection in one of the door locks, is it always locking, never unlocking that you see? Have you checked any wiring in the A-pillar-to-door bellows?

That's what I was thinking too.

Yes, it is always locking, never unlocking thankfully.

I haven't looked at any wiring yet, although I have been debating disconnecting the control panel on the driver's door arm rest, to see if that makes any difference, in case that button with the Key symbol is being randomly triggered somehow.
