Superb III Combi stereo build

Featured Replies

The Superb is in for it's audio upgrade B)

As I have stated before, I don't like the Canton system, and 610 watts, is nothing special.

All this is to my mind and ears, so if you like the Canton system, good for you, but it's certainly not for me.

I have built many systems in the past, but decided to out source this build, for various reasons (bad back, never worked on VAG and time constraint)

Chosen builder is Audio Advice in Portadown:

https://www.facebook.com/Audioadviceni/

Have a browse of his past builds if you want to know the quality.

My wants in a system, clarity, audiophile quality and reasonable bass.

No need to break windows or rattle the car to bits, but it must be felt!!!

Tis a simple system (of sorts), just the front end and sub in the boot.

But that's were the simplicity stops.

Nothing of the Canton system will be left active.

Front end:

Doors are getting Mille Legend 1800.3 in stock location

Door mids and tweeters are coming out and not being replaced.

Mids and tweeters, Mille Legend 700.3 and 280.3 are moving to the A pillars for better sound

Subwoofer:

A single 10" Audison Voce AV10 in a custom enclosure, same location as the stock 'sub'

One nicely surprising thing with the Canton is that it uses an optical signal.

This is being utilised into an Audison bit one Virtuoso DSP, with supplies the signal to 2 amps.

An Audison Voce AV 5.1k HD, which will drive the mids, tweeters and sub.

And an Audison Voce AV due to drive the door woofers.

System is going from 610w to 2550w, but with exceptional control.

Will continue to give updates and pics as I get them.

And no, I will not be disclosing the price of the system, if interested contact Phil or do some research, but let me just say it ain't cheap, but quality rarely is.

The optical signal that the Canton system uses is a MOST150 signal, not a S/PDIF signal, so it won't be able to connect directly into the DSP.

The only solution I know if the convert from MOST150 to S/PDIF is the Nav Tv Zen-V

https://www.nav.tv/products/most-audio-outputs-zen-specialty-items/most-audio-output-audi-bentley-porsche-seat-skoda-vw

Hey Rich,

Yeah am aware, is added cost to the build, but not much point in not using the proper signal at this stage.

Cool, I just didn't want you to get a meaty surprise.

The build looks good, should sound really nice.

I got the nasty surprise on Thursday

Am hoping it does, thanks

Just the one pic to add.

Do much prefer a built in sub to those sub boxes that are seen as an alternative.

They may have good sound, but not for me.

Next phase completed... which most people would think is the final phase, but not quite.

The build itself is done, but needs to be ran in for a month, then final tuning, RTA(real time alignment) and set to my exact listening requirements.

Here's the pics to drool over.

Does need some final touches, but that's me being a picky git

Love the boot build, especially raising the floor and not loosing any floor space, there will be a grill on the sub to protect it.

Also change of sub from original spec, changed to a Hertz MP 250 D2.3 PRO, keeping all the speakers Hertz Mille.

Neat touch to hold the half false floor up for access to spare wheel.

Amp and DSP install. False floor is fully removable. Again, does need a clean.

You don't see the door woofers, but can be seen in above picture.

A pillar builds look the part and really work.

Nice clean DRC install, if not the easiest to read, but won't be used that often.

Back ground colour is a nice red to match the rest of the ambient lighting.

Front doors and trunk area.

Very little rattle or road noise from the car anyway

  • 3 weeks later...

love that setup

any chance of some more pics of how the install was done and what kit you have thrown at it?

i'm going to have to pull my finger out now i think!

Thanks, me too.

For the 1st time, I didn't do the install, so not many pics of the routing and hidden components.

All the kits is listed above, bar the use of an Audison bit DMI to change the MOST to an optical.

Request away any other specifiic pics and will see what I can do.

Thanks, looking at the audison bit DMI Most page, it only lists a few audi's but nothing for skoda's, is there something else you needed, or just the MOST converter to Bit one?

I would be interested to know just how much adjustment it all needed to get a flat signal out, i'm never sure if its the DSP or the speakers in the skoda, but it always sounds like one note bass and a mid/high thats way to sharp (painfully so to me)

just been looking at your pictures again, i hadnt twigged till now that everything is digital until the amplifier, i'd still be running RCA cables here!

i need to go think and see if i can win the lottery!!

Just the optical cable, nothing else.

No adjustments needed, was a flat signal straight from source.

Yep, all HD digital system.

And not cheap 😬 but I am planning on keeping the Superb for many many years

Good investment then!

I Am very surprised that the signal was flat, I wonder if the canton amp is eq'ing that much or are the speakers just that bad!

Wonder if there is a way to hack the dsp  and get a better sound profile from it?

And no, not cheap, I have a guess at what it's cost you  so my hats off for getting a superb looking system!

BTW, how much if the car got sound deadened, just the boot, or the doors, floor & roof?

Bit of both would be my guess, speakers are a cheap construction

Just the sub area and front doors.

And after a few decent drives with various types of music, the car doesn't really need more.

Oh, car does have full sunroof, so not much point sound deadening there :D

Gotta love a sunroof!

How obvious are the mids and tweets in the A pillers from outside and when your driving?

I've managed to do tweeters in a pillers before, but mids always look like they could be rather distracting when driving, and a bit obvious to the less desirable typesin the world

  • Author

Not a distraction at all, barely affect the sight lines compared to the A pillars.

They are visible from the outside, but I tend to lower volume before parking up in an unknown area/parking lot, so as not to attract attention.

Have always had decent systems, so am wary, but not paranoid.

Did have a motor stolen once(many moons ago), but it was by scrots looking for fun, rather than after the car or system.

Plus few people here have decent systems, so not really on the radar for those un-desirables....

I am working on getting the matching Hertz grills fitted to the mids, just needs some more fettling

Grills on the mids fitted.

To my eyes, looks a lot better with them in place.

Normally they wouldn't be fitted, so needed some fettling

Slight change to what I had said before:

For the signal path, it's not an Audison DMI used, but a Zen5.

Sounds like there are issues with the DMI and the Zen5 addresses them all.

My mistake

And update after a few weeks of running in....

SOUNDS AMAZING!!!!

Any one who says the stock or Canton system sound good, need to have a listen to a proper set-up!!!

They are night and day, plain and simple!

Ok, so will I said it sounds amazing, it sounded really good and amazing compared to the Canton system, but over time it started to feel lacking in the lower end.

After some frustration and blowing one Sub, got it replaced by a different Hertz version.

Low end still seemed lacking... after a bot of research and testing of inputs, bluetooth and more, found out a lot about Bluetooth codecs, mush more than I ever wanted to 🤣

And Audison finally came out with a brilliant little solution, does add an added complexity, but makes the system sound the way I finally wanted.

https://www.audison.eu/products/b-con/

Now to sort a phone holder I'm happy with, as unable to have wired Carplay and the seperate Bluetooth channel for audio, unless I can be educated even further.

It's lucky your processor has two optical inputs.
