4x4 problems

Featured Replies

Hi,my 05 4x4 has been giving a bit of trouble. The esp light has been coming on sporadically sometimes it stays on with no effect on driving other times it flickers on and off and you can notice a drop in power with a feeling that something is dragging.

I thought it was water ingress in the ecu so sent it of to auto fault finder.got it fitted today and it's doing the same thing, can anyone offer some advice on what the problem could be. Thanks

Just to add fault code 052c is coming up,if anyone can shed some light on it i,d be very grateful. Thanks

A bit of googling and it seems that is CAN message 4wd system fault. Could be a broken wire, Haldenx pump etc. Has the Haldex unit ever been serviced?

Thanks for taking time to reply. I have never serviced it,possibly too late🙄. The guy from auto fault finder has sent me out a new unit to try .

My mechanic said he thought a wire fault but the auto guy says to try the new unit first

New unit? Which unit? . I think most likely Haldex pump is shot if never serviced. Needs oil change and mesh filter replaced or cleaned.  But it could be a wire fault amongst other possibilities.

The ecu unit

update, i had a new ecu fitted. still messing about, next up was new haldex pump fitted oil and filter changed, still no change. today i was told its possibly the g 419 multi axis sensor.

i,m really beginning to fall out of love with this car

Which ECU, the main engine ECU or the haldex controller?

Firing the parts cannon at it isn't a very good idea, a competent diagnostic tech with vcds or a good scanner giving a better detailed code should be able to narrow down the fault to within 1 or 2 components through live data, signal readings and wiring checks

the haldex controller

it is not bringing up any fault codes

On what reader?

If its a generic OBDII reader then it wont, you need something dealer level like VCDS to interrogate the fault codes in stored in the ABS, Haldex controller modules etc.

ok thanks

It was on the vw reader. No faults coming up

It that case it needs live data running on all wheel speed sensors, haldex sensors and anything else relevant to the 4wd and traction systems in a recording mode while the car is driven to see whats going on. The light flashing and cut in power tells me the esp system is reacting to a situation it think its seeing as you're driving along even if actually nothing abnormal is happening. This could be a sensor or wire playing up giving a false signal and the esp is cutting in incorrectly because of it. The lack of power is the esp cutting the throttle to regain traction, so I'm going to assume you've got a dodgy sensor telling it a wheel is slipping/spinning so its cutting the power to stop that, even though it isn't actually happening. As the esp light comes on when the system is activating and doing something, no fault code will be generated as the esp system is just doing its job as far as its concerned

My guess would be an ABS sensor on its way out...   Any fault codes in that system showing up?

Nothing showing up. It's very frustrating

As I posted, It wont show a fault because the system is cutting in as it thinks it should and is designed to, but in this case its because its being fed false data, but the esp brain doesn't know its false like we do, its just seeing a signal telling it a wheel is spinning so its flashing the light to tell you esp is cutting in and doing its job and cutting the power to regain the traction it thinks its lost.

A recording of wheel speed sensors while driving will probably show one or more wheels doing a ridiculous speed at some points compared to the others

Have you had a good look at the connector that goes to the Haldex controller and checked for any corrosion? I think there should be an earth strap on there somewhere as well.

On this generation you don't actually get an EML for any Haldex codes but scanning the Haldex module with VCDS or any other good scanner should point you in the right direction. The fact that you have had the EML light on may suggest a wheel sensor or other ABS/stability control issue like others have suggested so again, you need to do some diagnositcs to figure out what is going on.

its in with the mechanic again, hes had it on the vcds scanner and its not throwing up any faults.

What part of THERE WILL NOT BE A FAULT CODE is difficult to understand?

It needs the sensor readings monitored while its being driven.

I give up...

At a guess, the bit where non-programmer types think fault codes are some sort of black magic rather than the ECU receiving a value that's outside its programmed limits.

different people had asked about codes, not only you

i,m hoping this will be sorted out soon
