About to swap a 15 1.6 CR TDI for a 1.5 TSI

Featured Replies

Really fancy the extra power and the refinement of a petrol after multiple diesel Octavias dating back to a 2003 MK1.

Reserved a lovely 20 plate SE L ACT 1.5 TSi today and plan on a test drive and possibly signing for it on Monday.

I've had a 1.6 TDI for the past 4 years and stuck 190k on it pretty much trouble free but it's time to go after a recent gearbox scare.

However, I've been reading about the "kangarooing" issue with these cars and it's starting to put me off. I suppose the issue will manifest itself on the test drive and I can make a decision then. They also have a nice 1.6 TDI SE L ACT estate at the same price so that's the second option.

Does anyone recommend the 1.5?

You get gremlins with any car. The 1.5tsi stutter is a well documented problem but I believe VAG have done a fix for it.

I wouldnt be put off by it as any car can have issues. I would go and enjoy  your test drive. Like you I will make the switch back to petrol next year. Either a new Skoda Octavia VRS petrol hybrid or the 2.0TSi. However I have my eye on a Superb 280 L&K.

The best thing to do is to try and drive it in similar conditions to what you normally would.

Only thing I'm thinking, with the amount of miles you do, does a diesel not make more sense?

If OP regularly drives into Glasgow and is hoping to keep the new car after 2023 he may well be best to get a petrol because of the Glasgow LEZ

Euro6 is the minimum for diesels though. Surely a recent diesel will be ok?

I’ve just swapped a 1.6 diesel Civic for a 1.4 TSI SEL DSG Octavia estate and couldn’t be happier. Yeah economy is lower, I could get 60mpg from my Civic without much effort. Getting mid 40’s in the Octavia, but enjoying the extra power and auto box. Used to drive 40K a year but now only 15k and decided against going with diesel again as I think diesel will get penalised more so than petrol over the coming years.

OP mentions a 20 plate 1.5TSI but should check what MY the diesels became Euro6 compliant as a first step and check any car he looks at too (cars can often be in stock for several months and be from an earlier MY than the registration suggests).

I've had a 2013 1.6 diesel estate Octavia and currently have a 2019 1.5 petrol estate Octavia, the diesel was by far the better of the two engines! Just be careful before rushing to buy the 1.5 engined cars as the software fix done on my car (by Henrys in Glasgow) worsened my cars fuel consumption by at least 10%, best average mpg now is in the low 40's running around locally but the 1.6 diesel never did less than mid 50's mpg when I had it and recorded up to 70 mpg on some longer trips.

I was in the market for either the 1,4 or 1.5 TSI, ended up with the 1.4TSI. Don't think there is much difference in economy and glad I went for the 1.4TSI having read about the 1.5 issues.
