Have an issue with my aircon on a 2000 TDi 110. Something has dropped off and the aircon doesn't engage anymore. It is the Climatronic version and the fan and all the other gubbins work ok but the aircon won't engage. When digging aroud under the car a nut dropped out from nowhere which I assume has something to do with it!!!

I am wondering if anything vital has left the car and is now keeping the wildlife company on the side of the M4 somewhere.

Are there any diagrams showing the aircon system under the bonnet? Or has anyone else experienced the same issue?

Sorry for the lack of information but that is a technical as I get when looking under the hood!!

Repair costs will be around a grand for that, bummer when it happens but as said pretty common.

As per previous thread, can you not just get a new clutch for a compressor and haev the bolts rethreaded or is there some reason you can't do that?

It is one nut that holds the clutch on. usually the end is corroded up and not re useable. Also the heat build up before it fails knackers the end bearing up in the compressor.

Also the clutch has to be shimmed up exactly right or the same thing will happen.

Do you need to get the plastic off to see this thing as i may get some loctite on mine just to make sure. Either that or ask dealer to do it while it's in for some work.

If you want them to do anything worth while gett hem to check the condition of the clutch and the clearance on the coupling to check its running clearance is ok.

Would damage there be covered under warrenty or is it a pay yourself as it's a clutch? Also how much are the parts/labour.

Warranty would cover any damage but if its working there isnt a fault.

It seems there are a few 2000-2001 Octavias which are having problems with compressors failing, because the clutch bit falls off. You can add mine to the few :(

I bought my 2001 1.9Tdi Elegance(110bhp) saloon with 60000 miles on the clock under the Skoda approved used car scheme from Dennis Horton and Son in Lincoln, last September.

During the winter the climatronic system was set to Auto. I can't remember if there were any hot days between the time I bought the car and last week when the first hot day resulted in no cooling from the system.

I was told that although 8 months into the 1 year warranty, my problem is not covered in the warranty and have been quoted

This does seem to be happening quite a bit on cars that are on around 80k miles or more.

Of course a lot of people are only noticing the problem now that the weather is picking up and the aircon is needed

Went to see the service manager at Dennis Horton and Son in Lincoln. They were prepared to contribute 30 per cent of the cost as a goodwill gesture. So 30 per cent of £837 leaves me with an option to have cool air that will cost me over £500 to fix.

The service manager acknowledged that the clutch coming apart from the compressor is a fault that occurs and that when they service cars they 'check the nut is tight'.

He also acknowledged that the Skoda used car warranty really should have covered this expensive failure.

I will simply drive the car and in hot weather, use the sunroof and windows as my air conditioning! Shouldn't have to, but there are far more important things in life to be concerned about!

My advice is check your nuts are tight and search for a used car warranty that covers this potentially expensive failure.

£500 seems not that bad really when you consider you can sell it on for more.

Also have you tried an air con specialist. They may be able to source an OE compressor for less.
