Map not Showing in Virtual Cockpit

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Yesterday my 2020 Kodiaq 2.0 TDI stopped showing the maps in the Virtual Cockpit. I've had the car since November 2020 (2nd hand) and not had this problem before. I like to show the general map on teh main screen as a route overview, with the VC zoomed in to show detail at junctions, etc. I can even scroll the wheel on the steering wheel to affect the zoon level on the VC map display, but obviously there's nothing but a blank screen so no zoom shown.

I did a bit of searching on the forum and found that others had the same problem back in 2019, but despite trying the various things suggested there, no change so far. I've reset the Columbus system, I've tried changing various settings, I've made sure the VC display config is set on one of the specific options and not Auto. Nothing seems to work.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Or is it a dealer visit? Can I expect the dealer to know what to do?

TIA

Keith

I vaguely remember someone mentioning about the right scroll button having extra functions, if you press it (and hold it down) whilst scrolling it changes what is displayed in the central mfd between the dials.

But not sure if it does same with a digital dash, but possibly you did something similar without realising

If you press the scroll button, it gives a chache to select the screens to view. But after restarting the car everything goes back to default.

Nope, definitely not. I've tried everything including a complete reset. Although I can adjust settings for that VC map (zoom level, 2D/3D) and I can display other data (audio, car status, phone status, etc) in that location, there's no way to force the map to display. It also doesn't matter which format of the VC display I am using, there's just no map

However, I just went out this afternoon to run a few errands

1. Home to shop #1 (no navi): didn't work

2. Shop #1 to shop #2 (with navi): did work

3. Shop  #2 to shop #3 (with navi): didn't work

4. Shop #3 to Home (no navi): did work

In all cases, I unlocked/locked the car with the door touch handle, and I did nothing else other than set the navigation when required.

Complete mystery...and very frustrating

Unfortunately the random disappearance of the navigation screen in VC display is a known issue, according to my local Skoda dealer (it must be very well-known for them to admit having heard of it). Prior to its 1st service, our Kodiaq only exhibited the 'black screen of death' a few times, and those occasions were in the month before service. My dealer told me that they had 'updated the Columbus and VC software' and to be fair, the problem has occurred only once since then (so not a complete cure) but, yes, it's a total mystery regarding the factors that cause the problem. Not a big deal for me since I never use the in-built nav software, but it's nice to have the map there as an additional 'where am I?' and an independent check on traffic on the main roads.

Yes, same again today...two journeys, one without VC map and one with VC map :x

  • 2 weeks later...

Has started on my RS as well post first service. No map , only the zoom working while scrolling but no map image just an empty screen. All the other menus working fine.

Yes, it's really strange that it's only the map screen that goes AWOL: scrolling through the other screens, they were fine, hoped that might make the map screen revive, but no joy.....

I got mine to work and hope it stays. This is what worked for me. I tried with a key fob that was not used on a previous journey.

1) Choose Navigation in the window selection (2 overlapping squares on the steering wheel) . You will see the empty screen as you currently see.

2) Leave it here for the rest of your trip.

3) Switch off ignition at the end of your trip.

4) Turn on ignition et voila it is back . ( I had an hour's interval before restarting).

5) Click View to get the map to fill the entire screen

5) I switched off the ignition after a short trip and on restarting again, the maps are still showing on the VC.

Strangely enough, my map has been showing in the VC for the past week now...every journey, without fail. I'm not aware that I am doing anything differently than previously. I'm certainly not using a different key fob nor trying anything else to "force" it :shake:

Anyway, fingers crossed that it stays there...

I have owned my mk3 since last September, when it was 1 year old. The dealer owned from new and said they’d never noted a problem with the map display in the virtual cockpit. I’ve ‘lost’ the map display in the VC at least 3 times, apparently randomly, since I took ownership.

I can’t work out why it happens or what brings it back.
Today I lost it again, but I came back after a couple of hours. What I did notice was that the Fuel Economy data completely reset. All display options, Long Term, Since Refuelling and Since Start, all showed the mileage and economy for today only.
I originally thought that it was the map display that was having an issue displaying the map layer (as the navigation guidance worked as normal) but now I’m wondering if something else is going on too.

Skoda have a small issue with their navigation display in the virtual cockpit, but I’ll overlook it if they update their software so that my Android Auto navigation is allowed to display in it’s place.

There is an update available for those with MY20 cars

Thank you. I shall have a chat with my dealer.

Lost the VC Nav map again this morning.
Tried holding the Columbus power switch for 10 seconds….it beeped and just restarted. No settings were lost and VC Nav map remains lost.

Called my main dealer about software updates. Apparently there is one for a multi purpose camera ( I assume that’s the cluster of sensors in the windscreen) but nothing that mentions or hints at my issue.

Worth a try, thanks. I live in hope 🙂

The update for the Kodiaq might not be available for the Superb then.

Sounds like it.

Just been out to the car a moment ago and turn it on to find my VC Nav Map has returned. It feels like doing a quick off/on doesn’t help to change the status of the Nav Map display, but leaving the ignition turned off for a decent amount of minutes (I didn’t use the car for 90 minutes) might help by letting the cpu start afresh and kick the map back into life.
I love computers, when they work.

Probably 🤥

If anyone knows an honest dealer that is dedicated to 100% customer satisfaction, regardless of profit, please share…..this is the Unicorn we’ve been searching for. 😉

I am realistic enough to know that I need to find these things before the warranty expires or it’s definitely all down to my pocket.

Kolorado, I'm shocked! Any dealer that was honest and dedicated to customer satisfaction would have their franchise removed, and the staff publicly executed as a warning to others. This is The Motor Trade, after all, they have standards!

My dealer was aware of the problem and claims to have updated the software. The problem still occurs (like, well, today) but it's rare. If there is a sequence of button presses (eg turn off stop/start, change driver mode) which are all done before the map would normally display, which might somehow kill it, my observation is that there is no pattern that I can discern.

Hi people, Im probably trying my luck, but did anyone figured out how to fix it? It started doing same thing on my 69 plate superb now 😂🙈 it’s on, its off , it’s on its off.. i can’t figure out what to do with it. I didn’t use the nav on my vc often, but when I used it in the past it always worked. Since Monday it’s 50/50. What’s weird my superb went to skoda for recall just 2 weeks ago.. I guess it’s just coincidence lol

Just to add to this story...

My map in the VC has gone again this week, after being trouble-free for over a year 😪
