Excessive tire wear

Featured Replies

My 2016 VRs tdi wears out rear tires really quickly. I'm averaging 5k to 8k miles per pair regardless of brand. The wear is even across the tread. Pressure is checked regularly and is at recommended settings. The rear shocks and bushes have been replaced. I fitted 4 Falkens in March, the rears are wearing noticeably faster than the fronts. I mostly drive the car on motorways. Any one else have the same issues or know of a solution? I love the car but I'm seriously thinking of getting rid because of this issue.

Have you have a full 4 wheel alignment check done?

Are you the original owner, if not do you know the history of the car?

No, I was wondering whether to. That's probably the next thing to do.

Mind wore down so I got it aligned at Preston Skoda. Worked out cheaper than most garages charge now for 4 wheel alignment.

You should be getting at least double that if not triple with mostly motorway miles. Are both wearing the same? Are the motorway surfaces particularly hard on tyres or are they boggo tarmac?

Yeah, you need a 4-wheel alignment, particularly if the drive is fine (because someone has attempted to correct a rear end problem by adjusting the front and made the car track true without correcting the actual fault).

Look for somewhere trustworthy with a full Hunter alignment rig.

How much did they charge? My limited dealings with them suggests they will charge an arm and a leg for even routine stuff, making up their own terms as they go along.

I don't use them anymore but I remember them trying to charge me nearly double the listed Skoda price for a basic service because it is a VRS.

BTW I asked about the history to try and eliminate that the car has been rebuilt with the rear wheels not parallel to the front wheels and hence the car 'crabbing' down the road scrubbing the rear wheels.

I've come across this sort of behaviour in the past. Had a Laguna that was an uncommon spec so Renault tried the "limited edition" route. Told them to shove it and did the work myself for normal prices.

Honesty it was daft, literally read the Skoda site t's and C's to them and they were still persistent.

Back to OP, sounds like you need a wheel alignment, preferably hunter as other posters have noted. My backs have usually only worn down to about 4-5mm by the time the fronts are due. Rotate them so they go onto the front then.

Edit* - just seen the response below, I think that pretty much confirms that is your issue and I'd be surprised if that hasn't sorted it.

I've just had a four wheel alignment check done, the back was so far out there was no more red on the read out! My local Formula 1 tire center did the check free, the adjustment cost £75. Hopefully this will sort the problem

I was charged £75. They are one of only a few main dealers in the coutry with about 50k worth of alignment equipment. Most hunter alignment centres want that plus x amount per adjustment.

That's actually quite reasonable. I think I paid £50 at a place in Bolton with Hunter that is well rated but adjustments were on top. Didn't really need much so wasn't charged any extra.

That is your problem, tires are only for fitting to American cars and in exceptional circumstances to Audis and Vws sold on the North American continent. They should never be fitted to a Skoda which was never designed to work in America or run on tires. They wear terribly on roads with bends and even worse roundabouts which they are just not designed to tackle.

When you get a decent set of tyres fitted get the car properly aligned on a Hunter rig (as said above) by someone known to be able to use it.
