Anyone running Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres?

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm just curious if anyone is running PS4 (and NOT PS4S) tyres?

I have them on the car at the moment and they are fairly worn and also terrible.  Lose traction all the time...

I have read that they go off in the last 25% and therefore this is certainly what I am experiencing - but I wanted to see if anyone has bought them new and put them on a VRS and can give feedback?  I just don't want more of the same.

Anyone done this?  Thanks

I've got them on my car as a replacement for the shocking Bridgestone Potenzas S001's which were on it from new.

I think the grip from them, especially in the wet, is miles better. Found them fine in the cold as well. Can't say I've noticed a major difference in the dry, as the Bridgestones didn't struggle there.

Thank you

They are great tyres and IMHO are the best rubber you can put on the VRS.

Thanks - and they are definitely the Pilot Sport 4 and not the Polit Sport 4S?

mine definitely are PS4 and not PS4S. We can't get PS4S in 18" in Britain

We can now but they're expensive

That's because they are used on the Yaris GR  But PS4 are fine for me on the Octy

In fairness all Michelin tyres are expensive nowadays. I used to swear by the Pilot Sports but switched over to the Goodyear F1s. I find the F1 are just the same grip and handling wise but significantly cheaper.

The PS4 I got fitted last year were £99 each; fitted.  Think they still are on black circles. I wouldn’t call that expensive.

i've used ps4's on mine for ages grips well in dry and wet never noticed a significant drop off when getting low on tread although there obviously will be a difference between a new and well worn tyre.

there's a big island near me and even at the speed limit (i wont incriminate myself :D) i barely get tyre squeal, never felt like I've got to the limit of grip the only others i would  consider would be the eagle asymmetric

Also using PS4 tyres on my car, however I am tuned to 300hp/220kW at the front wheels so they struggle with the stock diff of the VRS to get grip! They are a fantastic tyre though, wear very well, quiet yet lots of corner grip. Just lower your expectations for grip if you have a front wheel drive turbo car and no LSD

Guessing you have the 18s fitted and not 19s. Huge price difference. Goodyears in 18s are £87 per tyre. In 19s, £137. Still compare that to the PS4. That is a saving of £52 for 4 tyres. Goodyear still gets my vote as they out do each other at various tyre tests. But the Goodyears always come out cheaper.

When I bought the car I had 4 Michelin PS4 tyres with approx 3mm tread left and they were awful! hardly any grip in the wet. I went for the PS4 on the Octavia as reviews were amazing and I have the PS4S on my Golf R and they are extraordinary. Not sure what they'll be like when they get low but for now absolutely brilliant in wet and dry, no more slippage! Bargain as well £86 each from BlackCircles . Wouldn't hesitate to buy them again :)

My PS4 fronts are approaching end of life. This is on a vRS 220. Had Continental Premium Contact 6 before these. Michelin's probably just have the edge but are definitely feeling more vague now (still legal). I think I'll go for the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 this time, good reviews and 1st = in 225/40 R18 Y spec on latest tyrereviews.com test. Blackcircles for me, with fitting at local Euromaster centre.

Yes. Which bit are you doubting?

That the other two came first as well

It goes back to what I have always said, there is no one BEST tyre. You pick the one with the characteristics you want or need. If cheap is one then it is as valid a reason as any.

I ran something I just sold on Contis and I'm not against the Goodyear either, in fact I'll probably be using it on one of mine for nothing more than the rim protector it has but anything I drive on the road regularly I tend to stick to Michelin (in the summer) at this point in time.

Which, if you look back at my post you earlier quoted a snippet of, I had typed 1st =

They did come 1st equal but it does note the Michelin is not most sporty feeling or responsive. So for me the Goodyears Asy 5s are the better option. Cost less with the same performance.

The last Pilots I had were the 3s until I got my Focus ST with Goodyear Asy 2 fitted. That was the changing point when I made the switch and havent had Michelins since.

I don't buy Michelins for sporty feel or response, I leave that to the suspension. I buy them for grip, If I think I will need wet grip more I buy Continental, or more recently Bridgestone. For the car that gets frequently rammed up against the kerb I am warming to the Goodyear. Cheap is better here too:thumbup:

But lets be honest no tyre is going to transform the handling characteristics of an Octy on standard suspension, even a vRS.

Most of the time the people complaining about grip on a particular summer tyre is when mine are on the rack in the back of the garage and I'm on winters.

Oh well all is well with the world then

but if you are trying to get the point across, may be worth spelling things out, trying to see the difference between = - and : on a small screen, not so easy...

groan away!

In fairness I like the std setup on the Octy. Mine is totally standard apart from the blanking plate on the intake. It does roll a bit but that is just generating grip. I do balance the car through corners etc as I am trained to the system of car control and it shifts. I think this is the first car I have not modified apart from some coding.

Apart from the more exotic machines one of the best handling bog standard cars out of the box was the MK1 Focus, Mk2 wasn't far behind, MK3 less so and not driven any since. Much better than the equivalent VAG cars of the day.

I find the Octy pretty capable but a bit over-damped, under-sprung and weak on the rear ARB. I have driven Octys with both KW street comfort and V3 suspension and (for different uses) that does transform the handling. Mine does not get the use to justify it but I did change the RARB and some pads may find their way under the rear springs one day.

My favourite car I have ever owned and driven was my mk1 Focus RS. Handled like a rally car. A bit underpowered as standard but mine made 281bhp with a few bits from Graham Goode Racing. That coincidentally was fitted with Michelin Pilot Sports (directional) and was what made me like Michelins.
