Vrs TDI warning lights on and not starting

Featured Replies

Hi, please can anyone help me, last night while driving the cluster warning lights came on pulled over switched car off and now it won't start, all the warning lights are on and getting loads of error messages, it starts for 1 second and switches off, the cluster white lights are not coming on just warning lights, also it won't communicate with any obd reader or vcds, I've read through the forum but can't find a definite answer,

It sounds like the immobiliser is kicking in, this is checked between the key transponder aerial & cluster for a match.

If VCDS won't talk to the cluster, may be a fuse supplying the cluster has blown.

Check all your fuses including those in the engine bay fusebox.

Also a sign of the alternator not charging the battery. Use a voltmeter or multimeter to check the battery volts before starting and again after trying to start.

With all the electronics in the car it is sensitive to low battery voltage. Typically it puts up a random range of warning lights on the dash when the voltage is too low. Using an external battery charge to recharge the battery will get you going again for a short time in an emergency. How old is the battery?

How many miles has the car done?

thanks for your reply guys,

@Piph all fuses are fine there was 1 blown on dash changed it but no difference

@pikpilot ive checked voltage 9.5v and when trying to crank 5v, but we did try to crank last night that may of caused it to drain, however was quite slow

i only bought car last night so no idea of battery age, ive attached pic

update

connected jumpleads for abot 15 minutes tried starting  the car it sprung to life, warning lights were still on but rev needle was moving as it should and beeping stopped but it died again after about a minute and went back to square one, i didn't get a chance to test with multimeter, as pikpilot said it does look like altenator, cars got 165k so i'll change battery and altenator,

problem happened on the motorway it was raining heavy and massive puddles could this of caused damage to altenator?

which battery do i need and which altenator 110 amp or 140 amp?

thanks

The battery is foutu for sure but dont condemn the alternator until you have checked the charging voltage with the engine running.

As said above, change the battery and then check the alternator is working by checking the battery with your voltmeter. Should be over 14V with the engine running at over 1500rpm. Do this immediately after changing the battery or you will damage the new battery if you over discharge it by driving with no alternator.

If the alternator is working I would leave it for a while until you have proof it is failing.

With your mileage you are more than half way through its life.

this is what its doing

Check again fuse 1 at the end of the dash. It powers the diagnostic port and the fuel pump.

If the fuse is ok then see if you can check if one of the "pins" the fuse pushes into is powered.

If not then is it an upstream fuse that is blown. Don't have wiring diag to hand so ask on here again an someone will tell which fuse to check next.

just checked that fuse and the pins, there is power, any other suggestions i can try? thanks

thought i'd try jumping it again left it for 10 minutes it started again, left it running for few minutes, then switched off on few times, took it for a quick spin all the lights have gone off except airbag light, only error code is p2015, still not sure if its sorted gonna take for a long drive and i'll report back,

thanks

update

after messing around yesterday it seems to be not recognising the key straight away, i have to leave key in ignition for a few minutes then it fires up, (red steering wheel light it wont start, when it turns amber then it starts) after it starts up its fine can switch on and off with no problems but when left off for 20 minutes or so it does it again, however ive just tried this morning it recognised/started straight away,

any suggestions?

Red steering wheel light means the power steering is faulty and won't let you start. Amber is advisory and will allow start.

Need to get the diagnostic codes but guessing at a damaged wire or connector; could also be corrosion in the engine bay fusebox or even battery terminals.

I had similar problems and it turned out to be one of two things. One was joint cracks on the solder of the dash clocks and the other was the ignition switch, sorry can’t remember which one solved it.

To be fair mine had different error codes but very similar problems.

I think that's a possibility it may be one or both or something else but I do think it's something to do with heavy rain causing my problem,

Is there any ECU, modules or relays that could get wet?

Can a wheel bearing issue cause this?

This time cars not stating at all just for 1 second and cuts out, turn ignition on and just all warning lights are on and beeping, this time windows and indicators not working and TC or tyre monitor (sorry can't remember which one) light flashes, central locking and other lights work,

This happened while driving all dash lights went out, warning lights came on, but this time I kept driving till I got home (10 min) once I switched car off it wouldn't start,

I've checked all fuses with tester and they were fine,

When I clear the codes only p0513 clears then comes back when trying to start,

Battery voltage is fine

Anything else I can check? I don't want to be spending money unnecessarily.

Sorry for long post,

Cheers

Big hint; Octavia 2 didn't have standard tyre pressure monitors.

Also, when this happens, does the charge light work like you'd expect? In particular, does it light up when you switch on but the engine isn't running (I don't need to know about anything else, just the behaviour of the charge light).

Sorry charge light?

When I check battery it 12.6 volts when I crank it the voltage drops to 10.8 then goes back to 12.6 because I've tried a few times bat showing 12.2 now I've left it now don't want to kill new battery

There's a video above of what it does

Thanks

Charge light - a little red light that lights up red when the battery registers a net discharge, subject to the alternator control wires being connected. Look, if anyone on this site asks a straight question like that, they are trying to get an answer without the need to actually read your mind!

Seeing a discharge on a voltmeter when the starter is cranking is expected behaviour.

Make a priority of tracing and fixing the water leak before replacing the module!
