Google Maps current Speed in Android Auto

Featured Replies

For the first time today I used Google Maps in Android Auto and was very disappointed that it wouldn't show my current speed and speed camera locations.

Searching on Google came up with numerous results that say it should show the current speed and camera locations.

I am using a Samsung S20 Plus running Android 11 with all updates.

Has anybody got these to work?

TIA

Are you sure google maps supports those features?

I know Waze does either over Android Auto or via the app :)

Yeah, I did lots of googling and they are features that have been introduced relatively recently.

I think it'll only show your speed when navigating, not when just in the app. From what I can remember that's how it works with me anyway.

Just use Waze if you are happy to use the very little data it relies on.

I have done some further testing and I believe that the Amundsen screen is not big enough to get current speed to show.

In reality my Tom Tom is a far better Sat Nav the either my Amundsen or Google Map as it has live traffic. It also shows current speed and speed cameras all the time.

Testing Google Map has been an interesting exercise.

Thanks for the replies.

Waze (available on Android auto) has live traffic, speed and cameras etc. It uses Google map data so always up to date. As an alternative TomTom is now available as an app on Android auto. I tried it but returned to Waze.

How intrusive are the ads?

I don't get any. Not sure what the description is on about. I've used it on/off for a number of years. First on phone and then on AA. Never seen an add.

There are occasional ads on Waze but it's not a banner or anything like that. It'll just be a poi for KFC or similar on the map. Certainly nothing intrusive and easily ignored 👍

Both Waze and Google maps use live traffic for route planning/redirection.

Checked my settings for Google maps and it seems there is a speedometer option. I'll give it a bash tomorrow and see if it does anything over AA...

That's interesting. I'll be keeping an eye out.

If you stop they might show a banner? But I can't say I've noticed one recently. Maybe they don't work in Android auto 🤣

Couple of pics from today....

Google maps showing both the speed limit and a speed camera:

Waze showing an ad for a M&S at a service station, I think if you stop it might show a banner too:

Yep, OK now

Just an FYI you'll find the data on cameras etc is the same across both services. Google bought Waze a couple of years back in order to acquire their crowd-sourced traffic data system.

Thanks to all for the posts.

I ran Waze today and it's definitely better than Google maps.

I'm also new to Android Auto. Had it about 2 weeks. The speed limits only seem to come on screen when in navigation mode. I will also try Waze.

Would anyone know if there is a way of changing the default app that opens when Android Auto starts up? I've looked in the settings in both the app and onscreen and cannot see anything obvious. Would be nice for Google Maps not to open every time.

Waze shows speed regardless of nav set or not.

I think the start up defaults to what you were using last. So if you don't want maps to show change it to a music or other app before you shutdown is my best suggestion.

Out of interest, what's the harm with maps starting as default?

Another good thing about Waze,

is that it often warns you of potholes, very useful for those on 19 inch rims and only 34psi.
